Amy Schneider's history-making 'Jeopardy!' streak comes to an end

Source: Washington Post

In a “Final Jeopardy” shocker, she draws a blank on “What is Bangladesh?” but goes out proud: “Playing ‘Jeopardy!’ is the most fun I’ve ever had and I really didn’t want it to stop.”

....

Schneider said she knew things might be going awry during Wednesday’s game when Talsma beat her to the buzzer on one crucial clue that led him to the Daily Double. He bet it all and was correct, and heading into Final Jeopardy, Schneider led $27,600 to Talsma’s $17,600.

The final category was “Countries of the World” with the clue: “The only nation in the world whose name in English ends in a ‘h,’ it’s also one of the 10 most populous.”

“I just blanked. I couldn’t come up with anything, and it was so frustrating,” Schneider said. The nature of the clue made it confounding: The country ended in an “h” so you couldn’t even venture a wild guess. Schneider didn’t guess anything, but Talsma answered correctly with “Bangladesh.” He won with $29,600 while Schneider finished in second with $19,600. Janice Hawthorne Timm, a music educator from Ukiah, Calif., missed the answer as well and came in third place.

I am retired and when I heard the final jeopardy clue the first thing that popped into my mind was "The Concert for Bangladesh" Of course that was the only answer I knew.

Talsma bet it all on the first Daily Double and lost. And won on his next Daily Double.

Is it possible that she had decided to allow someone to win. It also struck me as strange that she had to add the comment that she would have liked to continue winning. Why would she offer this explanation? Of course, it could be she just had a bad night. I am no expert on geography, but Bangladesh immediately came to mind.

They tape 10 shows in one week and take a week off. 5 shows on a Wednesday and 5 on a Thursday I believe. The show yesterday might had been the 8th of 10 for that week. And maybe it was exhausting for some reason. Then again, the other players might had been able to buzz in sooner.

My daughter appeared on Jeopardy! in 2016. She was on two shows. If she had won again, she would have come back to tape five in one day. The best players can get fatigued after such an outing.

We were happy to see our daughter make an appearance at all. She had been trying for years to get on the show. It was fun to be a part of the audience, and to see Alex Trebek while he was still with us.

I tried out for Jeopardy a few years ago and it was a neat experience. I've watched most of her run on the show and had a feeling last night might be her last.

It is the effective capital of the West Bank section of the Palestinian Territories. I spend a New Year's Eve there once. A very nice city.
