U. of Michigan reaches $490M settlement over sexual abuse

By MIKE HOUSEHOLDER

The University of Michigan has agreed to a $490 million settlement with hundreds of people who say they were sexually assaulted by a former sports doctor at the school, those involved in the agreement said Wednesday.

Attorney Parker Stinar said that 1,050 people will share in the settlement, which was reached the night before. ... University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald confirmed the settlement and said a statement would be released later Wednesday.

The university had been in mediation to resolve multiple lawsuits by mostly men who said Anderson sexually abused them during routine medical examinations. Anderson worked at the university from 1966 until his 2003 retirement and was director of the university’s Health Service and a physician for multiple athletic teams, including football.

The deal came just after two men who say they were sexually assaulted by Anderson said they were hoping that a change in leadership with the weekend firing of university President Mark Schlissel would allow the school be more accountable toward abuse victims.

U of M, Ohio State, Jim Jordan...

“Some OSU coaches used the mock threat of ‘having to see Dr Strauss’ as motivation to make their athletes run faster or practice harder.” Congressman and former Ohio State assistant wrestling coach Jim Jordan is among those who are accused of turning a blind eye to what was happening to the young men placed under his stewardship. Indeed, several athletes told Ohio State’s commission on the scandal that they “talked about Strauss’ inappropriate genital exams and ... voyeurism directly to – or in front of – OSU coaching staff.”

Do to Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State what they did to Penn State then they will take notice.

This was a guy who started assaulting people at Michigan in the 60s, but the football coach vouched for him so he transferred into be the team doctor. There he assaulted hundreds of young men and women with impunity. The head coach and the AD were approached about him many times, the head coach's response was to tell his players being assaulted to "toughen up."

And the coverup didn't even end after Anderson's death, the current administration became aware of it in 2018 and chose to have campus police lead a quiet investigation. It wasn't until 2020 when one of the victims took it to the media that Michigan made so much as a statement publicly about it. Now they're low balling the survivors because they were able cover it up successfully enough to keep the public outcry to a minimum. Sickening.

First - They are all making up the same story.
If that doesn't work.
Here's a bunch of money now don't tell anyone.
No matter what, destroy as much evidence as possible.
