(2,031 posts)It still would have been better if everyone lived. If some one had to die I am glad it was the person who started this mess. I am not defending his actions, I just dont like police killing suspects so much.

(19,564 posts)The hostage taker refused to release them for a half a day. A full 12 hours. The longer these types of situations go on without a peaceful resolution, the less chance the victims will survive the event. The more tired and desperate they become, the higher the chance of a bad outcome for the victims if the person holding them is not receptive to turning themselves in. That's just hard facts.
Ultimately, I'm grateful the innocent victims survived, even if they're forever changed. It's not their fault this person chose this heinous course of events. Even though they'll relive all this for the rest of their lives.

Sorry, but see both those as better then only the suspect dead. True, hostages dead would be worse, but cops killing people isn't the best outcome.

(17,912 posts)authorities may not have had a choice. Very credible threats to start killing hostages if demands aren't met is a possibility. It was a judgement call I'm glad I don't have to make.

(107,956 posts)The man who took four hostages at a synagogue in Texas on Saturday is a 44 year-old British citizen, the FBI said Sunday.
In a statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the man as Malik Faisal Akram. Mr. Akram died late Saturday after a standoff that lasted more than 10 hours in the Dallas suburb of Colleyville.
An elite FBI rescue team that flew in from Quantico, Va., stormed the synagogue and freed three of the hostages, authorities said. One hostage was released earlier, and none were harmed.
A law-enforcement official with knowledge of the situation said Mr. Akram is believed to have flown from Britain to the U.S. in recent days.

(53,955 posts)Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker has publicly described for the first time the moment he and two other hostages escaped a gunman in his synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, on Saturday
The last hour or so of the standoff, he wasnt getting what he wanted, Cytron-Walker told the BBC in an interview posted on Monday morning. It didnt look good. It didnt sound good. We were very, we were terrified.
And when I saw an opportunity where he wasnt in a good position, I made sure that the two gentlemen who were still with me that they were ready to go. The exit wasnt too far away. I told them to go, I threw a chair at the gunman and I headed for the door. And all three of us were able to get out without even a shot being fired.
The 11-hour standoff in the Fort Worth suburb Saturday ended when an FBI SWAT team raided the synagogue after the rabbi and two other hostages fled. The gunman, Malik Faisal Akram, a British citizen, died in the raid.
