RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) A group of North Carolina voters told state officials on Monday they want U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn disqualified as a congressional candidate, citing his involvement in last Januarys rally in Washington questioning the presidential election outcome before a Capitol riot later that day.
Cawthorn's office quickly condemned the candidacy challenge of the Republican, which was filed on behalf of 11 voters with the State Board of Elections, which oversees a process by which a candidates qualifications are scrutinized. The voters contend that Cawthorn, who formally filed as a candidate for the 13th District seat last month, cant run because he fails to comply with an amendment in the U.S. Constitution ratified shortly after the Civil War.
The 1868 amendment says no one can serve in Congress who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress . . . to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same.
The written challenge says the events on Jan. 6, 2021 amounted to an insurrection and that Cawthorns speech at the rally supporting President Donald Trump, his other comments and information in published reports provide a reasonable suspicion or belief that he helped facilitate the insurrection and is thus disqualified.

(13,582 posts)Its getting pretty obvious that republicans have given up on democracy and are fully endorsing a singular strongman dictatorship as the best way to get what they want. We must stop rewarding these insurrectionists when they clearly are anti-American unconstitutional fascists.

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may, by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
I thought repukes were the law and order party?
Note this part of the law: or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. Many of them are guilty!

A handful of voters claiming he has won't get a legal hearing.
