People Tied to Project Veritas Scrutinized in Theft of Diary From Biden's Daughter
Source: New York Times
The Justice Department searched two locations associated with the conservative group Project Veritas as part of an investigation into how a diary stolen from President Bidens daughter, Ashley, came to be publicly disclosed a week and a half before the 2020 presidential election, according to people briefed on the matter.
Federal agents in New York conducted the court-ordered searches on Thursday one in New York City and one in suburban Westchester County at places linked to people who had worked with the group and its leader, James OKeefe, according to two of the people briefed on the events. The investigation is being handled by F.B.I. agents and federal prosecutors in Manhattan who work on public corruption matters, the people said.
Project Veritas did not publish Ms. Bidens diary, but dozens of handwritten pages from it were posted on a right wing website on Oct. 24, 2020, at a time when President Donald J. Trump was seeking to undermine Mr. Bidens credibility by portraying his son, Hunter, as engaging in corrupt business dealings. The posting was largely ignored by other conservative outlets and the mainstream media.
The website said it had obtained the diary from a whistle-blower who worked for a media organization that refused to publish a story about it before the election. It claimed to know where the actual diary was located and that the whistle-blower had an audio recording of Ms. Biden admitting it was hers.

The four defendants who were arrested in January in Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in the Hale Boggs federal complex in New Orleans pleaded guilty Wednesday morning in federal court to entering real property belonging to the United States under false pretenses.
Magistrate Judge Daniel Knowles III sentenced Stan Dai, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan each to two years probation, a fine of $1,500 and 75 hours of community service during their first year of probation.
James O'Keefe, as leader of the group and famous for posing as a pimp in ACORN office videos, received three years of probation, a fine of $1,500 and 100 hours of community service.
Each of the defendants made a statement to the court. They said they did not intend to commit a crime They also apologized for the inconvenience they caused security workers at the federal building.

ACORN, the community organizing group which found itself embroiled in the latest of several controversies after some of its workers were recorded providing advice to a couple posing as a pimp and prostitute, was cleared of illegality in the matter by the former Massachusetts attorney general.
But Scott Harshbarger, the lawyer ACORN hired to conduct a review, criticized the organization for bad management which it said contributed to the ACORN's problems. A major problem, he said, was that the organization grew too quickly, neglecting training of its workers and other essentials.
(snip)
After the videos by a conservative videographer went viral on the Internet, Congress passed legislation to prevent ACORN from receiving federal funding. ACORN is suing the federal government on the grounds that the legislation is an unconstitutional "bill of attainder" since it targets for punishment an individual group. ACORN fired some of the workers caught on video.
ACORN welcomed the report as an important step in its redemption.

And that should have been on the record as circumstances that precluded any leniency when he later attempted to bug Landrieu.

(35,662 posts)a long time ago, after one of his stunts, we in the unions were warned about possible infiltration. We agreed upon some standards, such as verifying to whom we were speaking.
In no time at all, we started receiving fishy calls. Most were from women, sadly. They were trying to get us to talk about a particular court decision.
Later, and I cannot remember how this happened, we learned one of the callers was a Project Veritas person. I think she may have been exposed on another of their scams and we recognized her from her pic on the web.

PV will have to cross some other hypothetical line for O'Keefe to suffer any consequences other than continued, bottomless funding from asshole RW Billionaires.

There's time for pats on the back and a few martinis after the struggle for power is won. Anything up to that point of complete victory is serious and single-minded.
They are a formidable and deadly serious opponent. Anyone thinking they're going to play fair and by the rules is living in a dream world. Either we fight the exact same way, or we concede victory. There is no "Mr. nice guy" in politics. Sorry to say, but that's the way it is.
