North Carolina legislature approves new US House map
Source: The Hill
The North Carolina General Assembly on Thursday gave a final stamp of approval to new U.S. House district lines that will likely give Republicans two additional seats in Congress in next year's midterm elections, over objections from Democrats and anti-gerrymandering activists.
The vote, on a party-line basis, will put the new maps into effect. A North Carolina state law, passed in 1996, prevents Gov. Roy Cooper (D) from vetoing the law establishing the new boundaries.
North Carolina's population grew by more than 900,000 residents in the last decade, enough to earn the state an extra seat in Congress, swelling its delegation to 14 members for the next decade.
The new maps will create 10 seats in which Republicans have a distinct advantage, three seats that are likely to be held by Democrats, and a single competitive district that likely tilts slightly toward Democrats. Republicans hold eight of 13 seats under the current district lines.

As long as they can get away with it, they will never be forced to admit HOW they get away with it.

(4,167 posts)Are essentially 50/50 (even Biden/Trump) states but their congressional delegation is 70% Republican
..while states like Colorado are +15 Biden, but its delegation is 50/50
.Democrats shouldnt have unilaterally disarmed.
Heck Texas is only +4 Trump, but their delegation is 80% Republican
..and when the media and Republicans point out that Democrats do it to, they like to point to Illinois and Maryland, but these states are +20 Biden so their delegations are properly represented

(8,726 posts)That is shit is no longer tar on the heels, it is the shit we need to wade through from criminal GQP. That population growth, mostly Florida Millionaires moving here to bring Desantis style corruption. Meadows and Cawthorn will be elected to senate next. Putin election integrity on display. ACLU just a few years ago deemed our district lines completely unconstitutional and that we no longer have a democracy in NC. Those districts and voter denial Laws will assure our dictatorship in NC. Industry growth will be more Dollar Stores, more Gun Stores and more Evilgelical churches. A bible and a gun required in your possession at all time. Hunting season will become year round on Dems, no limit, and bounties on breeding females.

(3,166 posts)The Republicans in the General Assembly violated their own rules about not splitting counties or communities of interest unless the population of said county was too large for a single district. We have two counties - Wake and Mecklenburg, which have more than a million people and thus have to be split into two districts. However, this map splits those two counties among three districts, and also does that to Guilford, home of Greensboro, in order to dilute that county's Democratic strength.
And that little hook in the NW corner of the state? That is where I live, in Madam Virginia Foxx's district in Watauga County. They have pulled ONE voting precinct out of our county, the one that she lives in, and stuck it with District 11, while the rest of my relatively small county (population 54,000) gets put into MadCaw's 14th district. UGH.
I hate Republicans.
