Trump's COVID-19 response led to many preventable deaths, Deborah Birx told House lawmakers.
Over 130,000 lives could've been saved if Trump's White House followed the science, she said.
Birx also testified that the 2020 election distracted Trump from the pandemic.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the former White House COVID-19 response coordinator, in testimony to the House select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis said that former President Donald Trump's approach to the pandemic led to a massive number of preventable deaths.
"No," Birx said when asked if Trump did everything in his power to curb the spread and save lives, per excerpts of her testimony released by the committee on Tuesday.
"And I've said that to the White House in general, and I believe I was very clear to the president in specifics of what I needed him to do," she added.
Birx, who testified before the committee in mid-October, said that over 130,000 lives could've been saved in the early stages of the pandemic had Trump's White House adhered to the science and pushed for measures advocated by experts.

Last summer and this summer it's been much worse in southern red states. I'm sure they lost some voters in big swing states like Florida and Georgia.

(118,064 posts)orange traitor**. You sat silent while he talked bleach and UV light. You actually, with a straight face, without a hint of sarcasm, told us how smart he was, what an amazing grasp of data he had.
You cannot bring back those who died because of him, and because of your complicity. Shut up, and may we never hear your sycophantic voice again. I hope you are not "practicing" medicine anywhere, ever.

(21,086 posts)Imagine if Trump was adamant about masks, promoted vaccines and vaccine mandates, and fully supported all social distancing shutdowns. His followers would have been religious about wearing masks and social distancing. Heck, his followers would have been policing mask wearing everywhere. Dems would have went along because of the science.
People don't get it, but the US had all of the advantages fighting this, we had more time to prepare than most other countries, we could have easily instituted real health screenings at the airports very early in the game. But Trump was more worried about the stock market. The US could have limited the first wave by a good deal. And then if Trump had pushed the science rather than use Covid as a wedge issue, the country could have handled this so much better. We have 750,000 deaths, this could have been 500,000 if Trump and the GOP had just not decided to use it as a wedge issue. Could have been 250,000 or less if they acted quickly and pushed the science while supporting all Covid prevention measures.
This didn't have to be a wedge issue. Republican voters didn't wake up one day and decide that masks and vaccines were going to be the hill they died (literally) on. Trump led them to that.
