Shooting spree suspect identified as man accused of Phoenix sports bar shooting in May
Source: Arizona Republic
Peoria police identified the man they believe went on a shooting spree in the West Valley on Thursday, killing one person and injuring 13 others, according to Maricopa County Superior Court records.
Ashin Scott Tricarico, 19, of Surprise, is suspected of being the man driving a white Volkswagen SUV on Thursday who terrorized West Valley residents for an hour and a half, according to court records.
Police say Tricarico was in the vehicle when he was found in the area of 147th and Grand avenues. He was arrested and later booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, five counts of aggravated assault, five counts of drive-by shooting, and one count of endangerment.
While being questioned about the shooting spree, Tricarico claimed that people had been after him after he was a security guard and was suspected of shooting a man on May 5 at a Phoenix sports bar. He said he saw people pointing guns at him wherever he went.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. near Loop 101 and Thunderbird Avenue, witnesses say a white SUV that was swerving while heading north on the 101 pulled up next to a red truck and then gunshots were heard, court records said.
Peoria police found a man dead with a gunshot wound in his neck several hours later in a red truck that had driven into the canal along Loop 101.

(5,987 posts)holy shit this is so random and evil. Why are we doing this to each other? It's like the country is doing a slow motion suicide while we pretend the 2a ties our hands.

(10,503 posts)but even then I would often get questions from Europeans about how dangerous it is to live here because of the guns. Most said they would never consider visiting the US for two reasons: guns and perceived lack of safety and since Trump since he was still in office at the time. I wonder how many millions of tourist dollars we will never see because people dont want to visit here since they know we often have several mass shootings per day. Of course, not every incident is reported in foreign media, but major gun violence is covered. And many Europeans especially read papers like the NYT and WaPo.

(63 posts)in a country of 330+ million its actually very rare to show up in an indiscriminate shooting. Most actual gun violence is targeted (individuals knowing individuals) and suicides. Those chances might go up a bit by visiting certain pockets of the country (like taking a stroll though certain parts of Chicago at night) You have a MASSIVELY higher chance in getting into a vehicle accident or especially run over and your chances of getting into a school shooting is about that of getting hit by lightning.

(4,657 posts)The nearly 40,000 Americans killed each year since 2016 by gun violence exceed the number of people killed by car accidents (39,000), despite the fact that in 2017 there were 221.7 million licensed drivers, and only 72 million registered gun owners.

To drive a car, it must be registered and the operator must be trained and licensed. Same should be true for guns. Semi-autos and pistols should be banned. You can protect your home or fight tyranny with a bolt action and a shotgun. I served two infantry combat tours. Was authorized a 9mm and never used it. Pistols are best used for committing crimes.
Great post Mysterian.

(63 posts)The right will not go for that. A vast majority of the middle will not go for that. And a majority of even the left will not go that far (especially with racism on the rise, riots, capitol insurrections, lack of police trust ect.). Because there are people who do want it to go that far is why every. little. thing is a struggle to get passed because one side knows where the other side wants to eventually take things and like it or not you cant pass jack shit federally with only 25% of the support.
Whether its moral or not, its not realistic. Guns ARE america, be it at home or abroad.

(2,971 posts)That would mean there are about a quarter billion of them here in the USA. I would also point out that the great majority of firearms currently being manufactured and/or imported to the USA are indeed overwhelmingly either handguns or semiautomatic rifles & shotguns, so the overall percentage of such guns will only go up over time.

(3,307 posts)There's this little thing called the Second Amendment. Perhaps you've heard of it? Guns aren't going anywhere; the genie is out of the bottle. Your proposal to ban the vast majority of firearms is dead on arrival. But if you want to continue to delude yourself, go nuts.
Mysterian
(4,657 posts)since we have that little Second Amendment? You see, there are limits on the little Second Amendment. The debate is what those limits should be. I say let everybody have single action rifles and shotguns. No hunter needs a semi-auto.
Jedi Guy
(3,307 posts)And you'll be first in line to go door-to-door collecting those newly-banned handguns and semi-autos, right? Yes, of course you will.
The reality is that handguns and other semi-automatic weapons aren't going anywhere. So we end where we began, with me saying, "Good luck with that."

(4,657 posts)from a multi-billion dollar gun compensation fund. High fines for first offense violations with escalating fines and jail sentences for repeat offenses.
Yes, the USA can do what civilized countries are doing right now. Too bad you have such little faith in the USA. The reality is the USA will have weapons control just like civilized nations. The only queston is when.
Citizens who wish to play with military weapons can join the Army, instead of playing GI Joe like they do now.
Jedi Guy
(3,307 posts)A new federal assault weapons ban may happen, and I suppose it's possible a federal ban on high-capacity magazines may happen, too. But it's delusional to think that handguns and other semi-automatic weapons are going to be banned in the United States. It's just not going to happen. Even talking about it plays into the "Democrats want to ban all guns" narrative, which undermines otherwise reasonable gun control measures.

(2,971 posts)Number of handguns and semiautomatic rifles and shotguns in the USA: Roughly 300 million.
Number of firearms manufactured and/or imported each year (largely handguns and semiautos): 15 million.
Working lifetime of a firearm with minimal maintenance: Centuries.
Good luck...you'll need it.

See how easy that was? Just like the civilized nations of the globe.

(2,971 posts)Just as an FYI, the estimated compliance rate with the much-touted 1996 Australian gun confiscation law is a whopping 20%. What would it be here, where the vast majority of firearms are "in the wild", so to speak, where no record exists of their current ownership?
10%? Less?

(63 posts)the dangers of having a firearm nor am i saying things shouldnt be regulated or changed. I was responding to the PERCEIVED dangers people think they are in. Those who think they are going to step out of their house and get shot, those who think they are sending their kids to a shooting gallery, those who think as soon as they step foot off the plane during a vacation are going to be met with bullets. That is NOT the reality of the country as a whole. Not even close. The vehicle example was to show that there are significantly other issues you should be worried about in your daily life than winding up on the other end of a gun.
Of which vehicle deaths are behind gun deaths, but then vehicle accidents are 20x higher and both types of vehicle issues also tend to be accidents, that is indiscriminate which tends to be even more terrifying for average individuals going about their day. As i said 2/3rds of gun deaths are suicides with the bulk of the rest being one on one conflicts with individuals they know (family members, neighbors ect.), rival gangs and the like.
Also there isnt 72million registered firearms or that is to say 72million in citizens hands. There is no federal registry nor any federal law saying you have to register your firearm in 90% of the country. Private sales are largely legal, home made, 3d printed and 80% lower builds are all generally legal and require no serial numbers. Most guns made before the 1968 gun control act also were not even required to have serial numbers of any kind. The actual amount of firearms in civilian hands is estimated to be atleast 4-5x that number.

(7,419 posts)I qualified expert with my M1 Garland rifle. With the Army .45 caliber pistol I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I think that is one of the reasons that cops empty their magazines when they start shooting - they are looking to get in that lucky shot.

(33,643 posts)So I think the statement as written is actually true.
Also, the majority of gun deaths are suicides, whereas almost no auto-related deaths are.
So comparisons of this sort are not really comparing apples to apples, on the part of either side.

(63 posts)I was using it as a more notable example of gang violence which might carry with it high indiscriminate bystander injuries due to lots of turf beefs and example shootings of property to carry a message. You can use what ever city you want with high gang activity. Staying out of those specific areas, usually associated within specific cities lowers your chances of being involved in a shooting.

(58,707 posts)... to see people walking the street packing, including rifles, in downtown Phoenix in '75 in the middle of the day.
I've got some incredible stories about some people who'd shot someone and got off on self defense and got their guns back while I was living there.
Nebraska has had an open carry law since statehood, and doesn't have near the murder rate Cleveland, Ohio does with pretty tight registration and is only now considering open carry.
Frankly, I think we need to disarm everybody, including the police.

This is not new,
And this is sad and true.
That almost anyone can get a gun
And shoot someone.

(45,037 posts)He was working at a bar as a security guard, shot an unruly patron, claimed self-defense. Clearly he wasn't either charged, or arrested. His guns weren't removed from him either. So he was allowed to run free, fully armed, even after he shot a guy.
If it's true that he believed everybody was after him/pointing guns at him, it sounds like he perhaps was a paranoid schizophrenic.

(9,073 posts)This is my generic response to gun threads where people are shot and killed by the dumb or criminal possession of guns. For the record, I grew up in the South and on military bases. I was taught about firearms as a child, and I grew up hunting, was a member of the NRA, and I still own guns. In the 70s, I dropped out of the NRA because they become more radical and less interested in safety and training. Some personal experiences where people I know were involved in shootings caused me to realize that anyone could obtain and posses a gun no matter how illogical it was for them to have a gun. Also, easy access to more powerful guns, guns in the hands of children, and guns that werent secured are out of control in our society. As such, heres what I now think ought to be the requirements to possess a gun. Im not debating the legal language, I just think its the reasonable way to stop the shootings. Notice, none of this restricts the type of guns sold. This is aimed at the people who shoot others, because its clear that they should never have had a gun.
1.) Anyone in possession of a gun (whether they own it or not) should have a regularly renewed license. If you want to call it a permit, certificate, or something else that's fine.
2.) To get a license, you should have a background check, and be examined by a professional for emotional and mental stability appropriate for gun possession. It might be appropriate to require that examination to be accompanied by references from family, friends, employers, etc. This check is not to subject you to a mental health diagnosis, just check on your superficial and apparent gun-worthyness.
3.) To get the license, you should be required to take a safety course and pass a test appropriate to the type of gun you want to use.
4.) To get a license, you should be over 21. Under 21, you could only use a gun under direct supervision of a licensed person and after obtaining a learners license. Your license might be restricted if you have children or criminals or other unsafe people living in your home. (If you want to argue 18 or 25 or some other age, fine. 21 makes sense to me.)
5.) If you possess a gun, you would have to carry a liability insurance policy specifically for gun ownership - and likely you would have to provide proof of appropriate storage, security, and whatever statistical reasons that emerge that would drive the costs and ability to get insurance.
6.) You could not purchase a gun or ammunition without a license, and purchases would have a waiting period.
7.) If you possess a gun without a license, you go to jail, the gun is impounded, and a judge will have to let you go (just like a DUI).
8.) No one should carry an unsecured gun (except in a locked case, unloaded) when outside of home. Guns should be secure when transporting to a shooting event without demonstrating a special need. Their license should indicate training and special carry circumstances beyond recreational shooting (security guard, etc.). If you are carrying your gun while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you lose your gun and license.
9.) If you buy, sell, give away, or inherit a gun, your license information should be recorded.
10.) If you accidentally discharge your gun, commit a crime, get referred by a mental health professional, are served a restraining order, etc., you should lose your license and guns until reinstated by a serious relicensing process.
Most of you know that a license is no big deal. Besides a drivers license you need a license to fish, operate a boat, or many other activities. I realize these differ by state, but that is not a reason to let anyone without a bit of sense pack a semiautomatic weapon in public, on the roads, and in schools. I think we need to make it much harder for some people to have guns.
