Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan launches Senate bid

Source: NBC News

By Henry J. Gomez

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, launched a campaign for Senate on Monday, giving Democrats their first candidate in the race to succeed Republican Sen. Rob Portman, who is not running for re-election.

The 10-term congressman first made his intentions known in a filing with the Federal Election Commission that identifies him as a Senate hopeful.

"The success of America isn’t housed in the halls of Congress," Ryan said in an announcement video. "It lies in the calloused hands and the unrelenting grit of America’s workers. Those who dug the deepest sent our nation soaring."

Ryan, 47, briefly competed for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, offering himself as a champion of working-class voters in the industrial Midwest. He’s also known nationally for his unsuccessful effort to unseat then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in 2017.

Fierce support of workers, a real personality that appeals to rank and file, not afraid to tell it like it is.

GOP should be very worried.

10. I Agree Auggie. With Biden's Strong Support of Labor Many More Union Households Will Vote Blue in 22

Biden has a proven record of supporting Labor and his Labor Secretary has serious labor bonifides as well. Some may strain to understand Walsh's strong Boston accent but he is a compelling figure with an even more compelling life story.

He’s my Rep. 🙂. One of the few bright spots in Ohio.

We’ve got a state full of Trump clowns, though, so it will be interesting.

Quietly pro-choice, against radical gun control, strongly pro-union, and a prolific speech maker.
He's good at raising cash but doesn't seem beholden to corporate lobbyists.

Democrats could do much worse if they demand a litmus test on any one liberal issue and ignore a candidate's social faults. Tim Ryan knows his base.

It's imperative that Dems increase their numbers in the House and Senate.

He is a younger Sherrod Brown and because of his drive and determination will have a shot at this seat. The guy also has a great heart and personality and people in Ohio already know him. I will be sending him money.
