Protesters Clash With Police In Brooklyn Center After Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting (MN)

Source: WCCO-TV (CBS affiliate Minneapolis)

Brooklyn Center police say an officer fatally shot a driver Sunday, leading to some clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Here are the latest updates:

9:49 p.m.: The standoff continues outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department between protesters and law enforcement.

Brooklyn Center police said officers pulled over a driver they said had an outstanding arrest warrant, just before 2 p.m. on the 6300 block of Orchard Avenue. As officers were trying to arrest the driver, police say they tried to get back inside their vehicle. An officer then shot the driver, who then drove a couple blocks more before hitting another vehicle in the area of 63rd Avenue North and Kathrene Drive. No one in that second vehicle was hurt. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the officers involved were believed to be wearing activated body cameras at the time of the shooting.

The victim’s mother, Katie Wright, spoke to the crowd. She said her son — 20-year-old Daunte Wright — had been killed by police. She said Wright’s girlfriend was in the car with him at the time of the traffic stop. Police say that woman suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash, and was taken to North Memorial Health.

More background at the article. It is being continuously updated.

Yes, the fatally shot driver is Black.

For non-Minnesotans, Brooklyn Center is the first suburb north of Minneapolis. Minneapolis is of course the city where George Floyd was murdered by then Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who has been on trial for the past 2 weeks.

According to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers pulled a car over for a traffic violation just before 2 p.m. near 63rd Avenue North and Orchard Avenue in Brooklyn Center.

Police say the officers determined the driver had an outstanding warrant, and the driver tried to get back in the vehicle while they were trying to make an arrest.

At that point, an officer then shot the driver, and the car kept driving for several blocks before crashing into another vehicle.

The mother told reporters she was on the phone with her son in the moments before he was shot.

"I heard scuffling, and I heard the police officers say, 'Daunte, don't run,' and then the other officer said, 'Put the phone down' and hung it up," Katie Wright said. "And a minute later, I called and his girlfriend answered — that was the passenger — and said that he'd been shot, and she put it on the driver's side and my son was laying there lifeless."

The Brooklyn Park Police Department says someone shot at the department Sunday night, shattering the glass doors to the lobby.

According to the department, the incident happened just after 8 p.m. It's unclear how many rounds were fired.

Protesters pretty peaceful except for verbal expression. And there was some trash thrown. And maybe I missed some things.

Police, in riot gear and with some sort of tank-like vehicle, unleashed their arsenal. Flash bangs, apparently several types of crowd control gas, and plastic bullets. Maybe more.

Prayers for the family and loved ones of Daunte Wright. Prayers that we may end police violence against black and brown bodies.

Just before 11 p.m., an MPR News reporter witnessed stores being damaged and some looting underway at the Shingle Creek Crossing shopping center and nearby stores in Brooklyn Park. A large number of law enforcement officers were responding to the area.

MPR reporter's tweet 1047p
Cars are pouring into Shingle Creek Crossing, with widespread break ins and looting going on. Many stores damaged. Lots of high speed traffic and violations. Area appears fairly dangerous, traffic wise.

Some new stuff that hasn't been posted before, various excerpts, bold-facing added by me:

At about 11:30 p.m., Brooklyn Center police declared the crowd an unlawful assembly and said anyone who remained at the scene — including journalists — would be arrested. Minnesota National Guard personnel were seen in the area of the police station, on Humboldt Avenue north of Interstate 94.

There also were police scanner reports of sporadic looting and property damage in Minneapolis in the early morning hours Monday, prompting a large law enforcement response.

Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said more National Guard troops and state law enforcement personnel were headed into the Twin Cities and would be visible in the metro area this week, on top of personnel already in place for the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial.

Harrington said about 20 businesses had been damaged in the Shingle Creek retail area. ((Brooklyn Center))

just when maybe, maybe we were making progress -- the fact that it's such an easy instinct for cops to shoot and kill someone and it's so often a black person, is sickening

If you do what the officers tell you to do you stand a good chance of not getting killed. Trying to get away and you stand a good chance of getting killed. Not just Blacks, but last year they killed over 450 White people.
