Georgia governor: Loss of All-Star game will hurt minorities
Source: AP
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) Georgias Republican governor on Saturday stepped up his attack on Major League Baseballs decision to pull this summers All-Star Game from the state in response to a sweeping new voting law, saying the move politicized the sport and would hurt minority-owned businesses.
Its minority-owned businesses that have been hit harder than most because of an invisible virus by no fault of their own, Gov. Brian Kemp said. And these are the same minority businesses that are now being impacted by another decision that is by no fault of their own.
Kemp spoke along with Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, also a Republican, at a seafood and poboy restaurant miles from the stadium in a suburb north of Atlanta where the game would have been held, though he said he didnt think the restaurant was minority-owned.
He has previously criticized MLBs decision. The game will now be played in Denver. Kemp noted at Saturdays news conference that Denver has a much smaller percentage of African Americans than Atlanta. And he said MLBs move has injected politics into the great American pastime.

Perhaps the governor ought to take a look in the mirror. Hint: The painting.

(2,636 posts)The Braves still play 81 games in the new ballpark, the one moved to the suburbs, so it wasn't in icky downtown. It's not like revenue they depended on year in and year out. The hotels rooms you all were whining about, those were all black owned hotels, were they? Nice try.
He could give two shits about how it affects Black people. He doesn't think they are fully people. That's why he doesn't want them to vote. Because they will fully vote his ass out.

(3,562 posts)Expresses concerns about hurting minorities. The only concern that the GOP has about minorities is that we are not dying fast enough for them.
they sound utterly ridiculous to those of us very aware they don't give a DAMN about POC, they don't even want them VOTING

(157 posts)He doesn't give a damn about minorities. Just pretending he does to try to create drama. If he cared about minorities he wouldn't have signed a bill to protect confederate monuments when he first came into office, he wouldn't have kicked all of those minorities off the voter rolls when he was Secretary of State, and he wouldn't have signed the most recent minority voter defraud bill. I'll be glad when Stacey Abrams kicks his ass out of office and into permanent irrelevance in the next election.

(20,760 posts)...park your pasty ass on a bus bench or some apartment steps, and ask every black person who passes what hurts them more: Losing a summer sporting event, or losing their vote.
Try it, shitweasel.
I dare ya.

(22,124 posts)hurting minorities kind of doesn't ring true IMHO, as I'm sure that the tickets to the game are going to be pretty expensive, thus
the wealthiest are going to miss out on the game, especially to a headliner game.
And let me correct the stupid ignorant governor, he and his cronies started this whole thing by passing the restrictive voter legislation, which forced many to speak out against this ridiculous bill.

(115,693 posts)It's the income any city brings in from visitors to these big sports events - hotels, restaurants, concessions, etc., other work performed by people in service jobs. And it's true, that income will be lost. But if he really cared about not hurting minorities he wouldn't be trying to screw them out of their voting rights.

Businesses around Atlanta will remember this when donating for the next election.

(45,442 posts)I've been there. It's like 10 miles away from downtown Atlanta. Truist Park doesn't have adequate public transit. Maybe some of the bars/restaurants nearby are minority owned but people at the games would be staying all over the area, including farther away from Atlanta.
Kemp couldn't find minorities to pose with him in the bill signing photo op? Hmm...

(549 posts)undoubtedly hurt black/coloured/Indian South Africans. But they were overwhelmingly in favor of it. Despite the U.S. rightist press, which gave the boycott the same framing as the Georgia governor does this time around.
