Giant Vessel Is Now Afloat, Inchcape Says: Suez Update
Source: Bloomberg
Salvage teams freed the Ever Given in the Suez Canal, according to maritime services provider Inchcape, almost a week after the giant vessel ran aground in one of the worlds most important trade paths.
While the ship is floating again, it wasnt immediately clear how soon the waterway would be open to traffic, or how long it will take to clear the logjam of more than 450 ships stuck, waiting and en route to the Suez that have identified it as their next destination.
The backlog is one more strain for global supply chains already stretched by the pandemic as the canal is a conduit for about 12% of global trade. Some ships have already opted for the long and expensive trip around the southern tip of Africa instead of Suez.

Otherwise, the next megaship is going to get stuck in the middle.

``The good news is that the stern is free but we saw that as the simplest part of the job,` Berdowski said, the AP reported.`
The toughest challenge remained at the front of the ship, he added, noting that workers would struggle to haul the fully laden 220,000-ton vessel over the clay of the canal bank.
An official at Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd., the company that owns the Ever Given, confirmed the vessel's bow had moved slightly, but warned the bottom of the ship was still touching the seafloor. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.
still stuck it seems according to the news this morning.

The massive salvage efforts are hoping another day of high tide may help the process of getting the bow unstuck from the clay bottom near the banks of the Canal.
Edited to add: I now know the correct turn is "regained buoyancy"

(101,390 posts)which was why the state of the tide was important - at it's highest, it was almost afloat, and that meant they could pull the stern out. Now, it's afloat, but stuck at the bow. They've move the stern sufficiently far to starboard that it should not get stuck again.

(101,390 posts)If there'd been a problem, towing it backwards to Suez would have meant less danger of further hull problems.
There's a huge container ship - YM Wish - that has just passed Ever Given, going SE, in the Great Bitter Lake, and 2 more behind it, so it looks like they've opened up the canal to traffic again.
