Police: Man, 5 Children Dead In Muskogee Shooting; Suspect Identified

MUSKOGEE, Okla. -

A man and five children are dead after an early-morning shooting in Muskogee, police said. Police have identified the shooting suspect as 25-year-old Jarron Deajon Pridgeon. Police said that reports of a shooting came in around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday near Augusta Avenue and Indiana Street.

According to police, when officers arrived on the scene, they found a man and four children dead inside the home. A fifth child was taken by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital, but police say that child has also died. Officers said that there was also one woman with life-threatening injuries who was taken to a Tulsa hospital. Police say the victims appear to be related and all lived in the home.

Police say when they arrived they found a suspect with a gun and an officer fired a round missing the suspect. After a short foot pursuit, officers say, the suspect was taken into custody. Officers have not yet released details on the suspect's identity or his relationship to the victims.

Muskogee PD press officer Lynn Hamlin said Jarron Deajon Pridgeon, 26, was taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit. The suspect, who was wielding a gun at the time of his arrest, is not cooperating with law enforcement officials at this time, Hamlin said.

Online court records show that Pridgeon had one arrest in 2017, for larceny of an automobile. In February 2019, he was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threatening to perform acts of violence, and misdemeanor malicious injury to private property. In June 2019, he was charged with obstruction, resisting an officer, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Those were filed as misdemeanors.

During a press conference just after noon, Hamlin said investigators aren't certain about the relationship between the suspect and his victims, but said the shooting wasn't random. She said the survivor is conscious and in stable condition. Hamlin wasn't able to give the ages of the children.

Hope we learn more about motive.

You don't break into the home of a large family at one in the morning to steal stuff. You expect you'll have to confront and kill people. It's a savage crime that seems on the face of it to be kind of personal.

losing your children and spouse and dealing with that and trying to move on with life.
