Pfizer Says No Vaccine Shipments Have Been Delayed
Source: Bloomberg
Pfizer Inc. said it has shipped all 2.9 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine that the U.S. government ordered this week and that it has millions more doses sitting in warehouses awaiting instructions for where to ship.
Officials from Operation Warp Speed have said that the second shots of the two-dose vaccines are being withheld until they are due in three weeks.
Some governors have complained this week that their allocations of Pfizers vaccine are less than what they had expected. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has said Pfizer is experiencing production issues, an assertion that Pfizer rejected. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar made similar claims in a briefing Wednesday.
Pfizers statement Thursday is the latest volley in a back-and-forth between Pfizer and U.S. officials over vaccine supply as the first shots roll out.

(112,488 posts)Officials in multiple states said they were alerted late Wednesday that their second shipments of Pfizer-BioNTechs vaccine next week had been reduced, sparking widespread confusion and spurring the companys CEO to put out a statement saying it had millions more doses than were being distributed.
The changes prompted concern in health departments across the country about whether Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administrations vaccine accelerator, was capable of distributing doses quickly enough to meet the target of delivering first shots to 20 million people by years end. A senior administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal plans, said the revised estimates were the result of states requesting an expedited timeline for locking in the following weeks shipments from Friday to Tuesday leaving less time for federal authorities to inspect and clear available supply.
A total of 2.9 million doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and the German company BioNTech was cleared for shipment this week, and 5.9?million doses of Modernas regimen are poised to go out next week if the vaccine is authorized this week, as expected. That will be on top of additional supply from Pfizer, which Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Wednesday would amount to 2 million doses.
That represents a sharp drop-off from what states were expecting, according to health officials in several states. At least three states received notice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday informing them of the shortfall, forcing last-minute changes to vaccine distribution plans for next week. Some places were intending to use the second shipment from Pfizer to begin vaccinating residents of long-term care facilities, officials said, creating dilemmas about whether to go ahead with those plans or to finish inoculating health-care providers on the front lines of the intensifying pandemic.

(23,656 posts)Get a number of doses, give half to people, hold the other half for three weeks to give as a second shot.
An optimistic approach (requires faith) would give all the doses to people, trusting that in three weeks, the same number (and more) of doses will be produced and shipped in time for all to get their second shot.
A realistic approach might be somewhere between the two approaches.
If "Operation Warp Speed" is hoarding the vaccine, I smell the stink of a Kushnerian operation, like when Homeland Security stole mountains of PPE last spring.
