Gov. Mike DeWine's response to the coronavirus pandemic has made him one of the most popular governors in the country.
But not among many Warren County Republicans, a deeply red county President Donald Trump won with 66% of the vote.
Ohio's Republican governor "grossly mishandled" this year's primary election and has "not reacted appropriately" to the pandemic, the Warren County Republican Party stated in a resolution signed June 22.
The Warren County GOP, in the resolution, said the governor should open Ohio to "all commerce" and allow Ohioans "to make lawful decisions regarding their own wellbeing and safety."

Mike DeWine and Larry Hogan have been unique among Republican Governors in taking a fairly outspoken stand in support of taking steps to limit the spread of COVID-19 and not trying to spread doubts about the science behind preventive measures, but it is interesting how even they get heat from the Republican base for not opening fast enough even as COVID-19's spread accelerates.

(32,017 posts)It features a beautiful, liberal college town (Oxford, home of Miami University of Ohio) in the middle of redneck hell. The county turned red while I was there (1992-94). I am proud to say that I voted against John Boehner (R) in that congressional district in 1994. He won and went on to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

(130,974 posts)and at the time, Oxford was not a liberal college town, not at all. Known as 'mother of fraternities,' and students known for taking more showers than @ other colleges, I felt need to get outta there for junior year, so was first student to spend a year in Europe. (Yes, I'm that old!)

(32,017 posts)The congressional seat was blue when I got there, and it was red when I left. Seemed to me that the area was going through a transition from blue to red. Admittedly, I surrounded myself with people from the English Department, and that probably influenced my perception that Oxford was fairly liberal. I must also admit that my students were rather conservative, but I chalked that up to the fact that Miami of Ohio is a rather elite rich kids school.

Re: English Department, familiar with these guys? Mr. White was a teacher of mine, and I remember Mr. Weigel.

(67,782 posts)SW Ohio is major redneck country.
I moved back to NYC a few months before WKRP in Cincinnati debuted. That was a great satire of SW Ohio, too bad more viewers couldn't get some of the subtle jokes.
