California has firm handle on coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Gavin Newsom says

SACRAMENTO Gov. Gavin Newsom gave a broad defense Monday of the accelerated reopening strategy in much of California, despite concerns from some public health experts that the state could see new coronavirus outbreaks.
Newsom said that even as Californias economy has begun reopening since May 8 and people have ventured outside their homes more, including over the Memorial Day weekend, the number of patients hospitalized and in intensive care units with coronavirus-related illness has remained stable.
Theres a certain point where you have to recognize you cant be in a permanent state where people are locked away for months and months and months on end, to see lives and livelihoods completely destroyed without considering the health impact of those decisions, Newsom said at a news conference.
Newsoms administration said 52 of the states 58 counties have met state criteria to reopen at a faster pace. Much of the Bay Area, however, is moving far slower than the rest of the state in lifting orders that barred such activities as in-store shopping, sit-down dining and indoor religious services.

(2,809 posts)I've been so frustrated feeling like the maskless, albeit so few in public venues here, would start to pick up the clue of "hello, idiot, what does absolutely everyone else around you have on right now that you don't?" I was really glad to see a checkout girl admonish a maskless person at the grocery checkout line. She got a scarf out of her purse and put it on. Gee, after she'd just breathed her flora all over the store.
I've also gently suggested the please wear a mask inside, for everyone's sake. Some will comply. Some scoff.
Some group of privileged young guys (obvious because of the overdemonstrative HUMMER they pile out of after taking up four parking spots with it) make a big show of being maskless and teasing as a group all the older folks in stores wearing masks. I've seen this little entourage of louts do this twice now... so we badly need some legal option to call enforcement out on these idiots.

(24,396 posts)It is non-thinking. It does not believe any happy talk that says it is being beaten. It spreads itself when humans provide an environment for it to spread, and that is exactly what is happening in states that reopened too soon. Hell, infections are up here in CA.
And now that weve reopened and impatient Americans have decided its time to move on, well, were asking for a resurgence of the virus, only the pressure to stay open and to NOT play the one card we have that we know works - ie: shutdown and stay at home - will be tremendous.
