WASHINGTON (AP) Pete Buttigieg, who rose from being an Indiana mayor to a barrier-breaking, top-tier candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, ended his campaign on Sunday.
The truth is the path has narrowed to a close for our candidacy if not for our cause, Buttigieg told supporters in South Bend, Indiana. We must recognize that at this point in the race, the best way to keep faith with those goals and ideals is to step aside and help bring our party and country together.
The decision came just a day after one of Buttigiegs leading rivals, former Vice President Joe Biden, scored a resounding victory in South Carolina that sparked new pressure on the partys moderate wing to coalesce behind Biden.
Buttigieg had been critical of Biden, charging that the 77-year-old lifelong politician was out of step with todays politics. But his criticism had shifted in recent days more toward front-runner Bernie Sanders, a polarizing progressive who was benefiting from the sheer number of candidates dividing up the moderate vote.

(26,342 posts)I hope the other candidates will all follow his lead and bow out just as gracefully as we near the end and rally around whichever of the remaining candidates is the winner because this race is to important to let ego get in the way as we cannot allow Trump and his co-conspirators (the Russian Republicans in the House and Senate) to continue to destroy this country.

(11,885 posts)And hate to see him go, but numbers don't lie, and he knows the only thing to do is to drop out now. Amy will be next , and she was very impressive also , both literate people unlike the sitting illegitimately putin installed illiterate person now in the White House. I have been for Warren and am hoping she does better but its not looking good for her now also, unless Bernie announces her as his VP, which would put him in the White House with those two, or a Stacy Abrams , to preserve the Senate numbers. I do think Mayor Pete has a role in our government as smart and articulate he is. He would have made a great President , for all the people. Our loss.
