Powerful storm to slam West Coast with feet of snow, flooding rain late this week
Source: AccuWeather
By Kyle Elliott,
After one storm system wallops Southern California and Arizona with heavy rain and high-country snow through Wednesday night, a much larger storm is set to slam Central and Northern California with a wide array of impacts from Friday into Saturday.
Although the center of the storm system will move ashore in Oregon later Saturday into Saturday night, the worst of the impacts will occur farther to the south.
Heavy rain and gusty winds will target coastal areas from San Francisco northward into southern Oregon spanning Friday into Saturday, as well as the Central Valley's I-5 corridor from Sacramento to Redding.
The foothills of the Sierra Nevada will also be hit hard with flooding downpours during this time.

(5,082 posts)the DC area in years past. The minute residents hear about the possibility of snow, then all the grocery stores get crazy with shoppers and pick the stores clean. I once made the mistake of going into one when there was a forecast for snow and I turned right around after I saw the check-out line snaking all the way to the back of the store, and this was the 15 item or less line. Good lord, what a sight.

(36,216 posts)in the northern part of the state, I just wondered, that's all. I visited friends in LA and just east of San Francisco last year.
My friends tell me how dry it's been, how water is tightly rationed, no lawn watering, etc., etc. I explained to them how Australia uses a cistern system, which they thought would be a good idea.
I just thought that with so much snow, rain, in the southern end of the state, there might be some other storage system.

(12,226 posts)Tally them up. There are more than 1,400 dams in the state. At least 1,000 are major and 55 can hold 100,000 acre-feet or more of water.
One acre-foot is enough to supply two average households for a year.
There are 36 reservoirs that can contain at least 200,000 acre-feet. Eleven can hold 1 million or more.

An acre-foot is 326,000 gallons, enough to supply two average households for a year.
The biggest California dam is Shasta on the Sacramento River with a capacity of 4.5 million acre-feet. Southern Californias largest reservoir is Diamond Valley near Hemet at 810,000 acre-feet.

Hope there is no or not much snow on Lord Ellis and Berry Summits.
Got new tires at Costco on Tuesday so prepared in that sense, but do not like making the trip in the dark especially during weather events. .
Had not noticed you at DU for some time. Liked your nature photo essays.
