White House and Republicans discuss limiting impeachment trial to two weeks

Source: Washington Post

A group of Republican senators and senior White House officials met privately Thursday to map out a strategy for a potential impeachment trial of President Trump, including rapid proceedings in the Senate that could be limited to about two weeks, according to multiple officials familiar with the talks.

The prospect of an abbreviated trial is viewed by several Senate Republicans as a favorable middle ground — substantial enough to give the proceedings credence without risking greater damage to Trump by dragging on too long.

Under this scenario, described by officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private meeting, the Senate trial could begin as early as January if the Democratic-controlled House votes to impeach Trump next month as appears increasingly likely. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said earlier this month that Trump would be acquitted in the Senate, where Republicans hold a 53-seat majority.

Even an accelerated two-week trial could run counter to what Trump has expressed privately. The president is “miserable” about the ongoing impeachment inquiry and has pushed to dismiss the proceedings right away, according to people familiar with Trump’s sentiments, who requested anonymity to discuss the president’s views.

2. Who runs the trial?

Seems like they're the jury. Wouldn't the House determine what case it will present?

3. They expect the jury foreman to run it.

And the jury heads up the defense too.

So I guess John Roberts is supposed to sit there and snore.

20. Everyone should write to Roberts.

Tell him that the case has already been determined by Moscow Mitch, so he does not need to even show up. Maybe the Not-So-Supreme Court has become obsolete, what with the gop toadies and drunks on the panel? Apart from the ladies, who respects any of these judges?

4. The Republican accomplices can conspire all they want with Trump however Pelosi can and should

drag it out for the next year in the House until a month or so before the elections.
Then they can use the Republicans vote in the Senate both against them and the other Republicans across the nation to rally Democrats and independents to get out and vote.

Voters will love them for that.

5. I have seen this movie before it was called the ...

... Kavanaugh hearings.

We need to pound the GOP Senators with overwhelming proof and demand that the full Mueller report be released prior to any Senste vote.

Fucking cheaters.

8. Need to time it just right and have the House not send it to the Senate until the elections

are nearer both to limit the ability of the Republicans to do damage control and so its still fresh in the voters minds.

12. Send it to Senate AFTER filing deadline for primaries.

I listened to an interesting discussion the other day suggesting that Senators may be more likely to vote to convict tRump if they don't have to worry about getting primaried. Not that repubs should be hesitating to convict for ANY reason, but this would remove one of their excuses.

And open hearings about the refusal of Trump to allow his Administration officials to testify.

22. Democrats shoot themselves in the foot again.

I can't believe I am reading that the public House deliberations are over. Did they also give themselves a tight deadline? Why not take a page out of your enemies book, and extend, drag on, stretch out this inquiry for weeks longer? Keep it in the public eye at the time when Democrats are in charge, and can make sure the public are getting true information and revelations.

You just know that if it were Republicans they would have just gotten started. Just as they now will limit their trial down to nothing. Where they'll enact rules like cross examination will be limited to 5 minutes. Limiting witnesses etc.

But no, we must be swift and efficient. I guess someone somewhere will give them a pat on the back for that. To the point that they hand the baton to the Republicans and in two weeks this will all be over, much like the Mueller investigation, which they also could have milked much much more, and soon the MSM will be on to the next blockbuster story.....NEXT, LINDSAY GRAHAM DETAILS THE EXTENT OF THE REAL BIDEN UKRAINE SCANDAL!!!

25. Agreed, in part.

In my opinion, they should now pivot to Trump's refusal to allow people to testify, and his refusal to supply requested information.

30. Definately!

Its all there for us on a platter.

If the situation were reversed, Republicans would be falling all over themselves in glee that we left them with so much material to use against us. And actual provable, fact based, criminal activity!

But Nancy wants to limit themselves to a "narrow focus" and a short time period. Just chew gum, its too complicated to walk as well.

They are vastly mistaken if they think that all they have to do is find the most provable instance of impeachable behaviour, extortion of a foreign official for political gain, which they have done already, and that will be enough for most Americans to commit to next November voting D. Turn former Trump supporters.

Public hearings MUST continue. And yeah, a good place to start the second round is with obstruction of justice, with his orders for witnesses not to testify, plus his tweet intimidating actual witnesses.

This impeachment hearing has revealed the most corrupted President, and even top R party brass, being complicit in history. It is of monumental importance to rid the country of him. Yet Democrats seem to be under the assumption that the MSM will carry the torch for them now. No, no they won't . If they actually are going to wrap it up now, they will hand everything to Mitch, who then will be in charge. And he will make sure it is finished with quickly and give very minimum time for Democratic questioning. It will all be over before Christmas, and by February first, all will be forgotten, as the MSM will be 3 news cycles on, and peddling some other new story.

7. Cool, expand the House investigation to 6 months.

They want to telegraph their political strategy - promote the Russian gameplen - expand the inquiry....plenty more dirt and obstruction of justice to investigate. Make the vote in October, 2020.

18. So the House Rethugs spent exactly how long investigating Benghazi and Emails?

...and now the Senate GOP wants to dispose of the impeachment, and all discussion of the evidence, in less than 2 weeks? Does that include the time used for GOP grandstanding during the proceedings?

21. I'm a bit confused...

I know the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court "presides" over the Impeachment Trial...

but....

Do the rules of procedure for the Senate (Jefferson's Manual for Legislative Procedure as modified by Senate rules) apply?

Does Moscow Mitch still set the rules?

Or, doe the Chief Justice follow rules (like rules for Civil Procedure) and enforce them?

Can somebody more experienced than I answer that?

27. the rules of the senate apply, but there are senate rules about impeachment trials.

normal judicial rules do not apply.

so basically, the chief justice presides over a senate trial under senate rules.

those rules allow him to make a few specific decisions, but he'll mostly try to lie low and have as little obvious impact as possible.
