Michael Bloomberg Is Expected to File for the Alabama 2020 Presidential Primary

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by NancyBlueINOklahoma (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: New York Times

Michael R. Bloomberg is actively preparing to enter the Democratic presidential primary and is expected to file paperwork this week designating himself as a candidate in at least one state with an early filing deadline, people briefed on Mr. Bloomberg’s plans said.

Mr. Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and billionaire businessman, has been privately weighing a bid for the White House for weeks and has not yet made a final decision on whether to run, an adviser said. But in the first sign that he is seriously moving toward a campaign, Mr. Bloomberg has dispatched staffers to Alabama to gather signatures to qualify for the primary there. Though Alabama does not hold an early primary, it has a Friday deadline for candidates to formally enter the race.

Should Mr. Bloomberg proceed with a campaign, it could represent a seismic disruption in the Democratic race. With his immense personal wealth, centrist views and close ties to the political establishment, he would present a grave and instantaneous threat to former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., who has been struggling to raise money and assemble a ideologically moderate coalition.

But Mr. Bloomberg could also reshape the race in other ways, intensifying the Democrats’ existing debates about economic inequality and corporate power, and offering fodder to the party’s rising populist wing, led by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, who contend that the extremely rich already wield far too much influence in politics. Mr. Bloomberg has repeatedly expressed discomfort with certain policies favored by both Ms. Warren and Mr. Sanders.

Seems like every once in awhile, he throws out these trial balloons. He apparently spent quite a bit during Tuesday's election.

The last thing we need now is another candidate. Plus, he's 77 years old!
FOUR septuagenarians in the race (and 5, counting MF45)? SERIOUSLY? At a time when we are desperately in need of someone who can serve two full terms at the top of their game, to address the multiple, difficult, urgent crises that will face us after Trump is removed from office in Jan 2021.
Please, NO.

In all fairness, at least Bloomberg served in public office as a former Mayor of New York City.

BUT!!

Bloomberg is a proponent of the unconstitutional Stop-and-frisk in New York City that targeted people of color.

After 4 years with one delusional, self-important billionaire, the last thing we need right now is another one (and, yes, I'm also talking to you, Tom Steyer. ). At least, in comparison to Steyer, for instance (or Trump), Bloomberg has some political experience. But that does not make it any more appropriate for him to enter this presidential race.

Sounds like an NRA mentality. And he also spends tons of money to defeat the NRA in their gun loving home state. Oh yes, even in the DC suburbs there are hunters and sportsmen who like to play with their semi-automatic rifles and fantasize about shooting people "in self defense".

Mike Bloomberg’s gun-control group just vastly outspent the NRA to help Democrats win in Virginia

And I was about to reply to your earlier post that you self-deleted but here was my response to that post which would be applicable here too -

"Democrats, please do not vote for a billionaire carpetbagger who has no governmental experience."

He was the mayor of the largest city in the U.S. for 12 years, after he bought his 3rd term so he most certainly does have "governmental experience" (in contrast to the thing in the WH right now).

But I think that "Democrats" know that he was a Republican before he was an Independent before he was a Democrat, and his "constituency" would be moderate Republicans and Independents (he is socially liberal and fiscally conservative).
