Susan Collins Will Oppose Controversial Judicial Nominee Steven Menashi
Source: Huffington Post
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said Wednesday that she will vote against President Donald Trumps controversial court pick Steven Menashi.
I intend to oppose his nomination, Collins told an activist involved with the progressive groups Demand Justice and the Center for Popular Democracy Action. The activist approached the senator in the hallway of a Senate building. (Watch the video above to catch Collins remarks.)
The Maine senator is the first Republican to come out against Menashi, a 40-year-old White House legal aide who is Trumps choice for a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. Her opposition alone wont sink Menashis nomination, but its one less vote hell have on the Senate floor.
Menashi has drawn strong opposition from progressive groups over his long record of undermining equality for communities of color, women and LGBTQ people. In his past writings, he has compared race data collection in college admissions to Germany under Adolf Hitler; denounced womens marches as sexual assault; opposed the radical abortion rights codified in Roe v. Wade; and written that it is ridiculous to say students chanting the Dartmouth football cheer, Wah-hoo-wah! Scalp em! are propagating a racist belief in the inferiority of American Indians.

(59,584 posts)So Collins gets to show just how spunky and independent she is.
Now she gets a chance to pretend she's going one step beyond being concerned, and the only fathomable reason she'd stray from the party line is that her vote isn't needed this time.

(1,499 posts)She needs to appear moderate for a few minutes.
The Senate probably has the votes without her help so she got permission from Moscow Mitch to put on airs.
It probably will not move local polls in Maine, we won't forget Kavanaugh and Sellout Susie's 100 other transgressions against The Way Life Should Be.
But even after she gets sent home, she will have served longer than the two terms she promised voters she would serve, and she still has her second husband's Russian Gas Contract money to soothe her.
