Videos show NYPD officers being doused with water, pelted with buckets while responding to calls

Updated on: July 23, 2019 / 12:52 PM / CBS News

Videos showing New York City police officers being doused with water while responding to calls over the weekend have gone viral online – and sparked widespread outrage in the city. One video, taken in Harlem over the weekend, shows two officers being doused with water and pelted with empty buckets while making an arrest.

NYPD Chief Terrence Monahan responded to the incident on Twitter. "The videos of cops being doused with water and having objects hurled at them as they made an arrest in #Harlem is reprehensible," Monahan wrote. "NYC's cops & communities have made remarkable progress — together — but EVERY New Yorker MUST show respect for our cops. They deserve nothing less."

This will only result in a downward spiral.

There are good cops and there are bad cops. Fortunately for everyone, there are many more "good cops" than rotten apples; but this is totally out of line. Charges should be filed should ANYONE pull this crap on a public servant, be it a policeman, a teacher, a dog catcher, a mailman, or anyone. I don't see how this is one bit funny.

The two officers deserve commendations for keeping their cools. I'm not sure that is going to be the case the next time some idiot pulls this shit.

I can understand the anger and frustration within communities that have been victimized by the actions of rogue cops and not having these individuals held accountable for their actions or given just a marginal rebuke. However, subjecting random cops to such abuse is disgusting and heartbreaking. Given the circumstances, I have to give them tremendous credit for exercising restraint. The reality is that these public servants are all that often stand between us and the predators in our society. Most are decent and are dedicated to keeping us safe - unfortunately some have violated that oath and should be banished from such service.

Just saying that for many years, AfAms and others have been subject to a different brand of policing than other, mostly white, people. Imho, that makes the police outrage a little disingenuos. I'd have been immensely impressed if NYC Chief of Police had said that he understood the anger and then went on to make appropriate remarks.

This was 100% stupid and counterproductive. Being "angry" about something doesn't give you the right to assault someone, which is basically what this comes down to. If all cops were as bad as some people around here make them out to be, this would have gone south in a hell of a hurry.

needs to support police when they arrive on the scene. That means citizens asking crowds to stand back, give them room to do their duty. A lot fewer problem that way, and police too are alerted at that point that their actions are being observed, appreciated. I think it would really dampen down situations.

in the Blue Wall of Silence, then they become complicit in the crimes and misdeeds of the bad cops. Every police department and law enforcement agency knows the cowards, bullies, racists, and thugs in their midst. In the case of police, 1 bad apple does spoil them all.

The vast majority of them outright support the murders, and other abuses, and make excuses. The fact is that most good cops get fired or and/or shuned and sometimes threatened by their own.

All we get all are those thin blue line American flags. As long as they close ranks, we're going to continue to have these tragedies.

I read where the cops in Louisiana who threatened to kill AOC were fired. But they're just going to go get hired in another jurisdiction.

Cops never denounce other cops. They close ranks and stand up for each other Knowing damn well they are defending murderers! Eric Garner is DEAD b/c a filthy racist pig used illegal holds and killed him. That mf'er is walking around a free man. F'him and those who defend him. There were FIVE cops around Garner and they all let him be killed.

Boo Hoo snow flakes. I'd rather have buckets of water than choke holds on me thank you very much.

Though there are arguments about malpractice laws themselves. And I don't know of any that have continued to work alongside a doctor that was videotaped intentionally killing someone, or practically all medical organizations going to absurd lengths to defend killings.

Also murdering doctors tend to have their career immediately ended, thrown in jail, and convicted.

A long time ago, before law school.

I will tell you the end result of this, because cops are just people doing a pretty thankless job.

The people with the lowest seniority or lowest rankings get the crappy assignments. So more bad cops will end up with this beat.

All the cops (even the good ones) will look at the address of an incident, see this area, go "Oh Shit" and call for back up before arriving because the neighborhood has proved dicey. So response times will be much slower.

All the cops (even the good ones) will care just a little bit less about the people in the neighborhood because they were treated badly. Because, you know, cops are humans and don't like being treated like garbage.

The end result is innocent people pay for the assholes with the buckets.

Hope it was worth it!

Those aren't good cops. At that point they're essentially organized crime. I'm not going to say it's "smart", but people are going to treat you like trash (and occasionally get violent) when you support the brutalization of their group.

Simon Says with a power tripping soldier wanna be cop. Shaver is seen on video, trying to comply with conflicting orders being screamed at him. “Keep your hands up. If you lower your hands, I will kill you. Crawl toward me.” They could have ordered him to lie down flat, and cuffed him there. But, no. Gotta feel like you have that power of life over death. Have to make a human being crawl toward you, like a dog. Bullshit.
Shaver is crying, begging for his life, then makes a mistake of pulling up his pants, and is gunned down.
Roid monster is found not guilty of murder, but he is fired from the department for the bad PR.
Then he got rehires for one day, so he could get his pension. The department apparently had no problem at all with the murder, or making the man crawl like a dog. They wanted to make sure he was able to retire. None of his fellow cops have spoken out against it.
This is just one of hundreds of stories across the country. Until I see changes in the way things like this are handled from regular beat cops all the way up to department heads, prosecutors, etc, there are no good cops. You don’t know if the guy pulling you over is a “good” one or one of these psychos.

They're freaking out over water? How many times have we seen cops pepper spray protesters who were often doing nothing wrong, shoot them with rubber bullets, arrest them on false charges, plant evidence, strangle a guy to death for selling cigarettes, harass minority men under stop and frisk, and God knows what else. But OMG! They got some water thrown on them. It's an OUTRAGE! An OUTRAGE I TELL YOU!"

For all the talk I hear about cops being brave, they are the biggest bunch of pansies when it comes to people pushing back on them.
