MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexicos president said on Friday he would respond with great prudence to threats by his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump to slap tariffs on Mexican goods entering the United States, and called on Mexicans to unite to deal with the challenge.
Trump has threatened to impose punitive tariffs on June 10 if Mexico does not stop the flow of illegal immigration from Central America to the United States.
Speaking at his regular news conference, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard would be in Washington tasked with convincing the U.S. government that Trumps measures were in neither countrys interest.
Lopez Obrador said he believed that Trump would understand in due course that the tariff threat was not the way to resolve the matter and stressed that Mexicans had united behind his government.

Does Obrador not understand that a) this is trump's form of "siege" warfare, and b) this is also trump's way of telling his followers (read sheep) that Mexico will indeed be paying for the wall.

(493 posts)Business groups are considering legal action against the White House over Mexico tariffs
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is mulling its legal options in response to the presidents plan for duties, the group said Friday.
The White House plans to put 5% tariffs on Mexican imports starting June 10.
Business groups more broadly are discussing the possibility of suing the White House, a source told CNBC. A decision on how to proceed is expected by Monday.
While top business organizations have repeatedly slammed tariffs Trump levied on trading partners such as Mexico, Canada and China, a lawsuit would mark a major escalation in their opposition to White House trade policy.
