Alice Madden, a former U.S. Energy Department official and Colorado House majority leader, announced Thursday she is running for U.S. Senate in 2020.
Madden is the 11th candidate in the Democratic field and one of several women focusing her candidacy on combating climate change. Madden was an environmental adviser to former Gov. Bill Ritter.
I am, as of now, really the leading climate and clean energy champion in this race, Madden said in an interview Thursday morning. And thats why I got in this race, because I know there wasnt anybody else, frankly, who could go to Washington and make things happen right away on this issue. Its what I will lead on; its the first thing Ill attack.
Madden ran for statewide office in 2016, losing a University of Colorado regent race by a narrow margin to Republican Regent Heidi Ganahl. Madden said her run in that race shows she can garner more than a million votes, raise money and compete across Colorado. Like her fellow Democratic candidates, Madden has sworn off corporate political action committee money.
