Washington measles outbreak spreads to Oregon, officials say

Source: Oregonlive

Oregon health officials say a Multnomah County resident has been diagnosed with measles, marking the first reported case of an infection in the state linked to a recent outbreak in Washington.

It’s not clear where in the county the person lives. The Oregon Health Authority announced Friday four new locations in Gresham, Wood Village and Troutdale where people may have been exposed to measles on Sunday and Wednesday.

2. There's a knock-on effect with measles, too.

If you contract measles, your immune system's probably impaired for years. One consequence is that you could contract a disease you were actually immunized against.

Note that the blond kid with the measles in the oregonlive.com link is a stock image, the same one from 2015 in the discovermagazine.com link, not of any of the kids actually infected.

Its used on a zillion sites (I couldn't find the original source of the image - likely public domain at this point).

13. I'm glad you pointed out the possible effect on the immune system, but please notice the word "may."

I contracted the measles when was six years old, had temperature of 105 degrees, but was fortunate to have no after effects at all. I don't think the evidence supports your contention that you will "probably" suffer damage to the immune system. That said, it can kill you, permanently damage your vision, and/or permanently damage your hearing.

I would not let them out in public until they were old enough.

8. I don't think anyone is blaming Oregon

The blame lies with anyone who doesn't vaccinate their kids or is spreading anti-vax dipshittery. It's not just radical GOP that's responsible for this although they certainly have their share. There's even been DUers spreading anti-vax nonsense. Many are still here, although they aren't finding an audience for their garbage here anymore, I have little doubt they are using other social media to spread ignorance.

On one hand, you have the crunchy hippie types who don't trust Big Pharma. On the other hand, you have the libertarians who want to defy the government. On the third hand you have the fundie homeschooling families who think that everything is in God's hands.

I used to live in Vancouver (in fact I want to go back to the area) for a campaign. I definitely saw the first two types of people while there.

My sister is a mom of 2 young children. She said that the antivaxxers are alive and well on social media and try to guilt trip parents against vaccinating their kids. Mommy bloggers are a huge part of the problem.

There's an international crisis of anti-vaccination hysteria and it appears to be promoted by Russian propaganda. It's causing whole countries to reject aid from non-governmental organizations.

What better way to take over the world?

We have had our share of woo supporting anti vaccination folks on DU. The whole big pharma thing. I think most have fled to greener pastures as the Fact Based community thing here has been taken more seriously. But don’t be surprised to see some of the show up. They will be more circumspect than they used to be, but you can’t miss them.

A few of my personal liberal friends subscribe to it. Cause they are just sure what they read on the internet is fact.

Some of them are still here. They are just far more careful about spreading their nonsense because they know they will be called out for it. Not that much different from the so-called "9-11 truthers". Some were one in the same.
