Michigan State president faces ouster amid Nassar fallout

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees will seek to oust interim President John Engler if he doesn’t resign amid criticism of comments he has made about victims of imprisoned ex-sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar, a trustee said Wednesday.

Brian Mosallam told The Associated Press that “the votes are there” to force Engler out at a special board meeting scheduled Thursday at the East Lansing school.

Mosallam said he understood that board Chairwoman Dianne Byrum has reached out to Engler. Both Byrum and Mosallam are Democrats, and Engler is a former Republican governor of Michigan.

In an editorial board meeting Friday with The Detroit News, Engler said women sexually assaulted by the now-imprisoned Nassar have been in the “spotlight” and are “still enjoying that moment at times, you know, the awards and recognition.”

regarding the victims. His first one made it seem that the victims were just gold diggers. I was surprised he survived that comment.

Engler:

"The survivors now are being manipulated by trial lawyers who in the end will each get millions of dollars more than any of [sic] individual survivors with the exception of Denhollander who is likely to get [sic] kickback from Manley [sic] for her role in the trial lawyer manipulation."

That was a reference to Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to go public with accusations against Nassar — a sports-medicine doctor who treated Olympic gymnasts — triggering the biggest sex-abuse scandal in the history of athletics.

for a number of years as governor. A known smartass, he left our 'balanced budget' state with a $4 bil deficit using accounting tricks.

governor, he couldn't keep his big, fat mouth shut. I live in the Lansing area and at first most people (not me) thought he was a great choice for Interim President. Then he started working and they remembered what he was like as governor. Good riddance.

I couldn't believe he'd bring anything to the job when they announced it. Hated him as a governor and he didn't do anything good for Michigan - only for himself. Typical of Republicans.
