'We are in trouble.' Global carbon emissions reached a new record high in 2018.

Source: The Washington Post

As nations assemble in Poland for climate talks, the figures suggest there is no clear end in sight to the growth of humanity’s contribution to climate change.

By Brady Dennis and Chris Mooney December 5 at 1:00 PM

Global emissions of carbon dioxide have reached the highest levels on record, scientists projected Wednesday, in the latest evidence of the chasm between international goals for combating climate change and what countries are actually doing.

Between 2014 and 2016, emissions remained largely flat, leading to hopes that the world was beginning to turn a corner. Those hopes have been dashed. In 2017, global emissions grew 1.6 percent. The rise in 2018 is projected to be 2.7 percent.

The expected increase, which would bring fossil fuel and industrial emissions to a record high of 37.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, is being driven by nearly 5 percent emissions growth in China and more than 6 percent in India, researchers estimated, along with growth in many other nations throughout the world. Emissions by the United States grew 2.5 percent, while emissions by the European Union declined by just under 1 percent.

As nations are gathered for climate talks in Poland, the message of Wednesday’s report was unambiguous: When it comes to promises to begin cutting the greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change, the world remains well off target.

meaning the rise of fascism and wanna-be right wing dictators I don't honestly see a hopeful end of the skyrocketing carbon emissions.

I think of this song when thinking of the earth and humanity.

Say the level of 1959 (assuming we decided that was a safe level): 9 billion tonnes of CO2 per year. That's about a quarter of today's emissions. Can we drop world emissions by 75% in the time we have before the climate runs away and the rise in CO2 becomes self-reinforcing? That may be as little as 20 years.

There is no evidence that we can do this, and there is especially no evidence that we want to or have the will to do it. None. Zip. Zilch. In the entire history of growth-based modern civilization of the last 5000 years.

Modern techno-industrial civilization is pretty much done, along with all the people it supports.

We need to start thinking in terms of adaptation rather than mitigation, and getting used to the implications of a shrinking civilization.

The sectors that need to cease operation are: Electricity and Heat; Agriculture and forestry; Industry; and Transportation. Basically most of civilization needs to shut down. Closing just a portion of one sector won't do it.

We need to cut CO2 emissions by 75% or more in order to save our bacon, if you'll pardon the expression.

I created this graphic in 2015. It implies the degree of global devastation caused by animal agriculture:

However, the world as a whole won't give up eating beef any more than it will give up driving cars or heating homes.
We each have our personal favourite whipping boy. It looks like yours is animal agriculture. Mine happens to be civilization as a whole.

We need to stop the damage. We will, but only when we are forced to by ecological circumstances.
