Hillary Clinton leaves door open for 2020 run: 'I'd like to be president'

Source: The Hill

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during an event over the weekend left the door open to a possible 2020 run, saying that even though she doesn't want to run, "I'd like to be president."

Clinton's comments come as speculation has increased over whether she will launch another bid after the midterm elections. "Do you want to run again?" Recode’s Kara Swisher asked during a Friday night Q&A with Clinton.

"No," Clinton replied quickly, sparking laughter from the audience. But when Swisher pressed her further, she added: "I’d like to be president."

Clinton went on to say that "there’s going to be so much work to be done" after a Democrat "hopefully" wins the next presidential election. "The work would be work that I feel very well prepared for having been in the Senate for eight years, having been a diplomat in the State Department," she said, listing off the qualifications that she often touted during her previous run.

Yes, there would be more competition. No one will defer to her as the presumptive front-runner. Nor will she likely be the only woman, thus splitting the votes of those who--at least all else being equal--really wanted to see the first female president. Also it is unlikely that she will quickly be down to only one barely threatening competitor, not to mention one who was not a particularly good debater. And she'd be going in as the only candidate who has proven that she is beatable by Trump (in terms of the electoral college, which is what matters). And there were polls in 2017 and 2018 still showing Hillary losing swing states that she lost last time.

No one doubts that you are qualified. Or that you would make an excellent president. Or disputes that you would right the course of this country back to the proper path. You would restore civility, dignity, respect, intelligence, honesty back to our nation. The rest of the world would realize that we had come to our senses, and our allies would trust us again.

But do you really want to get pulled down in the gutter again ? It will be worse this time around. The cesspool that politics has become is ugly business. You thought last time around was bad ?

You won't remember me, but when you first discussed running for president, I wrote you an impassioned letter begging you to reconsider. I feared for you, your sanity, your better well-being. I foresaw all of the vile, vulgar, vindictive, venomous, vengeful nastiness that you eventually went through.

My heart broke when you were robbed of the victory that was yours - by over 3 million votes.

Please don't put either one of us through that again.

We need young, fresh candidates. I admire you, know you really won, Hillary, but it is time to retire and let the next generation take over.

And I say this as one of the older generation who remembers when a youthful JFK was elected. We had the same when President Obama was elected. Now,we need another and there are plenty ready and willing to serve. They need that chance.

So we don't have to go through that shit with his supporters tarring Biden, Harris or any other potential nominee (TYT has already started cherry picking issues for smear pieces deeming Harris and Warren as "not a true progressive," while ignoring Sanders' abysmal record on guns and other issues, and the Bust folks will do it to any candidate not named "Bernie Sanders" )

If Clinton running again is rehashing the past, then ditto for Saint Bernard. And especially so, given his behavior when it came to conceding.

I supported Bernie Sanders and liked his policies more with a fear of Clinton baggage.

I then supported Hillary as I would any Democrat. I sincerely felt she would be much better than Trump - his potential as a president frightened me. I felt she was cheated and those feelings have increased with the Mueller investigation.

Bernie is going to be 79 in 2020. I think the physical demands of the job are too great to start it at that age.

Hillary is going to be 73 in 2020. I worry about the physical demands of starting that job at that age. She had health problems during the 2016 campaign. And she's got the Clinton baggage that lowers her ceiling in an environment where the GOP/Russians are still cheating. We need a candidate with a significant margin to overcome that cheating.

My preference at the moment is to look at other candidates for someone younger, new and without as much baggage. A number of other women seem to have some potential and they intrigue me though I'll settle for the best person for the job.

The 2020 primary candidates will be announcing their campaigns by January, so these trial balloons by HRC, Biden, Avenatti and others should get popped quickly so that fresh candidates can enter the field without a lot of rumours and speculation on “will s/he run?” diminishing and distracting from the early attention and momentum.

keeping her name out there, open to be drafted if there is no consensus candidate.
But what a boil on the asshole of life she would be as a candidate. Yes, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result but I don't think she is up to the hard work of another campaign after she has done it twice already.
But I do think that Trump would love to run against her again. But he fooled America once and too many on the Left were complacent about the 2016 campaign, evidently thinking that Clinton would surely win which allowed them to throw away their vote until they found out that elections really do have consequences. We've all found that out.
