China hacked a Navy contractor and secured a trove of highly sensitive data on submarine warfare
Source: Washington Post
Chinese government hackers have compromised the computers of a Navy contractor, stealing massive amounts of highly sensitive data related to undersea warfare including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020, according to American officials.
The breaches occurred in January and February, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The hackers targeted a contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military organization headquartered in Newport, R.I., that conducts research and development for submarines and underwater weaponry. The officials did not identify the contractor.
Taken were 614 gigabytes of material relating to a closely held project known as Sea Dragon, as well as signals and sensor data, submarine radio room information relating to cryptographic systems, and the Navy submarine development units electronic warfare library.
The Washington Post agreed to withhold certain details about the compromised missile project at the request of the Navy, which argued that their release could harm national security.

(15,260 posts)I think many of the problems in the DoD and contractors have existed for 20-60 years (or longer).
The bigger problem is that we have no leverage anymore over any state players since everything seems to be based on what's good for the Trump.Organization profits.

(16,646 posts)These will get worse because of electronic data. Think how many trucks would have been needed 40 years ago to haul off that much data. Now you can do it with a thumb drive.

(7,725 posts)for stealing the tax dollars given to develop that information, and who's going to jail for contracting w the U.S. Govt (and all of us), and risking the safety of our Homeland and Soldiers and Sailors and Airmen overseas? Is that even something they remember cudgeling everyone to death to get us into Iraq and Afghanistan and everywhere in between? Part-time patriots these guys.

A simple Chinese $500million loan to a Trump related project and a few trademarks granted to Trump family products was all it took.

(62,270 posts)Basically use shipbuilding techniques to build a big ass rocket that can float. No launch pad necessary. Much of the data regarding Sea Dragon is public, particularly the report commissioned to see if it was possible. I suspect a lot of the data here was regarding the shipbuilding aspect since 1) it was a Navy server and 2) there really isn't much research on a ship building company building a rocket, so it probably has a lot of secret ideas about the technical difficulties of doing it.
