Violent winds, rain and snow: A nor'easter is on its way

A powerful storm will lash the Northeast with coastal flooding, wind and heavy snow. Capital Weather Gang's Jason Samenow breaks down the storm forecast. (Claritza Jimenez, Jason Samenow/The Washington Post)

On Friday and Saturday, a powerful storm will lash the Northeast with destructive coastal flooding, wind and heavy snow. It is shaping up to be the most destructive nor’easter of the season, perhaps the most destructive in decades for some along the coast.

The coastal flooding could be worse than what New England experienced during the “bomb cyclone” in early January. Storm surge in eastern Massachusetts seems likely to match or exceed the levels of the early January storm as well as the Blizzard of 1978. With a massive, damaging wind field, it will mimic the impact of Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

The National Weather Service is calling it a life and death situation along the coast.

The flooding

The timing of this nor’easter could not be worse. It coincides with the full moon, when tides are at their highest. Coastal flooding already began Thursday morning because of high tide alone. On Friday and Saturday, 3 to 5 feet of storm surge will be added to the tides. There will also be extra inundation from waves, which are expected to reach a height of 30 feet offshore.

Lots more at site. Stay safe all on the east coast.

which was about a month ago. That would make the high tides even worse. There is nothing as bad as freezing water and wind to freeze a person or animal. Meanwhile CA is having another drought instead of rainy season.

And mainly too because it's been unusually wet during February so the ground is already saturated. Hoping for the best!

Extremes in temps and precip. If anyone is having a new baby this year they will never know what "normal" was. There is no "normal"in the forecast on any place on Earth. Europe will be hit especially hard along with the US. Isn't is nice that the moron has stopped research from the scientists on this subject from being released to the public, has forced resignations and will not replace the researchers?!?!? Thank goodness we still have scientists in other countries who are still allowed to do research and share their info with us. UNBELIEVABLE!

GOES-S, which will soon become GOES-17. GOES-16 (originally launched as GOES-R) was placed in orbit in late 2016 and has been incredible (notably during the big hurricanes over the past summer). So here's hoping this new one is just as exceptional!

And the mountains of snow were starting to melt. It's been a brutal winter here. And I also got my car washed.
