LINCOLN About 300 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students rallied Wednesday in protest of the white nationalist views espoused by one of their fellow students.
On a cold, sunny afternoon, students said there was no place for racism and hatefulness on their campus. Some speakers called for the student, Daniel Kleve, to be expelled.
Others encouraged white students to be more attentive to the needs and wishes of minority students, and some called on the administration to work harder for diversity, inclusion and student safety. The rally was held by students organized as UNL Against Hate.
For his part, Kleve said in an interview Wednesday that he likes to push free-speech boundaries and exaggerates for comedic effect but genuinely feels the need to defend his heritage. He reads philosophy and history, he said, and is serious about his biochemistry studies.

(10,749 posts)White people don't need to defend shit. We/they, regardless of religion, heritage, etc., have had advantages that people of color have not always had. It's a simple as that.
If we were talking about Irish, Italians, Germans, Jews, Catholics, in different periods of our history, then perhaps I could agree. But this is the 21st century. There is definitely anti-whatever sentiment. That's human nature. If we were an entirely white country, we'd find ways to discriminate against whites from this European country or that one, fat whites, tall whites, uneducated whites, etc. And, sure, evangelicals despise Catholics and, in the words of the great Tom Lehrer, everyone hates the Jews. But anti-discrimination laws have largely been successful in reducing, if not eliminating widespread discrimination. If "Irish/Jews/Norwegians need not apply" signs started going onto job listings, you can be pretty sure there would be a moral, social, and legal response. Women and LGBTQ are where these other groups were decades ago, but they are fighting the good fight and marginalizing those individuals and companies and politicians who continue to discriminate.
Yes, sure, you can pinpoint any number of grievances. When you get 320 million people in the same country, this is inevitable. But, folks, white people are not being discriminated against. If you're a southern White and your family fought on the losing side in the Civil War, deal with it. You were on the wrong side of history. You want to celebrate the loss, go right ahead. You have the right. But don't expect the rest of us to back you up. You want to celebrate your German/Italian/Austrian heritage, go right ahead. But when you bring Nazism into the picture, you should expect push back.

(10,112 posts)I really wish the press would call him a Nazi. This is my alma mater, the whole university is under siege by the unicameral. It gets 13% of state funds, but is asked to take 33% of the budget cuts proposed by our inherited gazillionaire idiot governor. A lecturer was also let go after a confrontation with some right wing nutjob part of some Koch organization.
