Despite more food-safety inspections and other initiatives over the past decade, the fresh produce industry is dealing with what may be its worst E. coli outbreak linked to leafy greens since 2006.
There's also been a sense of frustration for some in the food industry that more information hasn't been provided by the U.S. government.
A deadly strain of the E. coli bacteria possibly linked to romaine lettuce has sickened nearly 60 people and killed at least two in the U.S. and Canada, although U.S. health officials are still trying to nail down the source of the outbreak. Canada's public health agency, though, has said romaine lettuce is the source of its outbreak and advised its population to avoid consuming the leafy vegetable.

Of course, being that we have a GOP idiot sitting in the seat of President, these next 2 paragraphs (at the VERY end of the article) are a reality:
"Even so, the Trump administration has delayed some "key" portions of the food-safety overhaul from going into effect and is creating "a gap" in the farm-to-consumer "safety chain," the Center for Science in the Public Interest charged Thursday.
The center also said the Trump administration is effectively "undoing" rules intended to protect consumers from being exposed to hazards such as E. coli or salmonella."

(19,204 posts)a nation without rules - at least as far as the consumer is concerned - in food safety, banking, environmental standards, brokerage houses, oil drilling and refining, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and just about any other health, environment, and safety concern in the United States. This, of course, is to "loosen the stifling controls" on these businesses to increase their profits.
So let's see........we've cut all rules and regulations, given corporate tax cuts out the wazoo, given the billionaire owners of these businesses mammoth tax cuts as well, so these capitalist bastards will be making twice as much profit as before. And what does the consumer and wage earner get? SCREWED! That's what we get!
How many people think all this deregulation and these massive tax cuts will bring one stinking job back to this country? How many feel that wages will increase to a point where the middle class will start to expand once again? How many people think this REPUBLICAN STRANGLEHOLD ON OUR COUNTRY MUST END?

(32,748 posts)...it goes without saying. Any lettuce, green onions, celery, green pepper, or other types of veggies that are eaten raw, usually anything in a salad. Always wash tomatoes especially if they're to be eaten raw. I use a scrubbrush on the outside of potatoes, if I plan to cook and eat them as a baked potato. Rule of thumb, if the skin or outside of the veggie or fruit is to be eaten, it must be washed first.
if you're doing that regularly, you have nothing to worry about. Problem is, restaurants employ low-wage help and they sometimes cut corners.
