Testimony: Suspects bragged of dragging black man to death

Source: Associated Press

Updated 7:33 pm, Thursday, November 30, 2017

GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) — The case of two Georgia men accused of dragging a black man to his death behind a pickup truck is going before a grand jury.

Multiple media outlets report brothers-in-law William Moore Sr. and Frank Gebhardt appeared Thursday in magistrate court for a probable cause hearing at which a judge decided there was enough evidence against the men to proceed.

. . .

"They were proud of what they had done," said Coleman, who works with the GBI's cold case unit. "They felt like they were protecting the white race from black people."

Coleman said the men stabbed Coggins nearly 30 times, then chained his body to the pickup and dragged him into the woods.

(Top, from left to right) Frankie Gebhardt, Bill Moore Sr. and Gregory Huffman; (bottom) Sandra Bunn and Lamar Bunn were arrested Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 in connection with the 1983 death of Timothy Coggins.

The case had been dormant for years until a tip broke it open. William Moore Sr. and Frank Gebhardt were charged last month with murder. Three others — including two members of law enforcement — have been charged in connection with helping Moore and Gebhardt avoid prosecution.

The other three charged in the case are out on bond.

Sandra Bunn, 61, and her son, Lamar, were charged with obstruction of justice. Bunn is Gebhardt’s sister. Gregory Huffman, 47, was charged with violation of oath of office and obstruction of justice.

To think that they got away with it for 34 years just sickens me.

Confiscate all their property, leave nothing for their descendants and give it to the remaining members of Timothy Coggins family. Does Georgia have a death penalty?

I hope Timothy met my departed kitties and Matthew Shepard on his way to the gates. This makes me so sick.
