Betsy DeVos may give only partial relief to students defrauded by for-profit colleges
Source: The Guardian
The US education department is understood to be considering only partially forgiving federal loans for students defrauded by for-profit colleges.
Tens of thousands of students deceived by now-defunct for-profit schools had more than $550m in such loans canceled completely under Barack Obama.
According to department officials who were not authorized to publicly comment on the issue, Donald Trumps education secretary, Betsy DeVos, is working on a plan that could grant such students just partial relief.
If DeVos goes ahead, the change could hit many students who expected full loan forgiveness. It is not immediately clear how many students might be affected.
A department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday. But the Trump team has given hints of a new approach.
In August, the department extended its contract with a staffing agency to speed up the processing of a backlog of loan forgiveness claims. In the procurement notice, the department said: Policy changes may necessitate certain claims already processed be revisited to assess other attributes. The department would not further clarify the meaning of that notice.

(14,308 posts)I had never heard of Corinthian colleges before and there were 75 of them? Apparently they were general colleges. My first thought was it was going to be stuff like truck driver schools and beauty colleges but having read the story, it doesan't sound like it.
To me the most surprising thing in the story was that a woman is a year from graduating from getting a completely on-line degree and owes $ 40,000. I'm too old for this stuff, but I assumed on-line courses were pretty cheap.
There have been a lot of stories out recently questioning the value of college degrees. What was once thought of as necessary is now being challenged.
