Oxford University stabber avoids jail because of her extraordinary potential
Source: NY Post
An Oxford University student dubbed too clever to go to prison has walked free after stabbing her ex-boyfriend in a drug-fueled frenzy but moaned that she cant go clubbing without being recognized.
Aspiring heart surgeon Lavinia Woodward ran out of court with a big smile on her face Monday after being handed a suspended sentence.
Wearing a black suit and white blouse, she appeared in the glass-paneled dock before the judge at Oxford Crown Court.
Flanked by a female security guard, she wept and dabbed her eyes with a tissue as the judge sentenced her to 10 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
Defense lawyer James Sturman urged the judge to give Woodward a conditional discharge due to her unique vulnerability, remorse and good character.

So England has a few idiot judges too.

And for this young lady, I'm sure if she were brown and Muslim she would be labeled a terrorist.

(21,635 posts)My impression, though, has always been that these kinds of injustices are in general more frowned upon than they are here.
Perhaps the judge was a Thatcher appointee.

(1,058 posts)I'm fairly sure that an attractive white female college student who got drunk and stabbed an ex-boyfriend requiring him to get three stitches wouldn't get a custodial sentence in the US either. They might even plea down the felony.
I do not think this would have gone differently in the US. Drugs, alcohol and minor cuts should not put one in prison for any length of time. She needed help, not incarceration. Isn't that what we hear in the US as well?
