In an interview with MMA Junkie, Texas cagefighter Derrick Lewis detailed the devastation in Houston where he says he has been doing all he can to help people to safety, including one man who refused to leave his Confederate flag behind.

Lewis, who goes by the ring name of “The Black Beast,” said he has suffered the ill effects of wading through waist-deep water, but that people need help and he’s doing all he can.

..................................

Lewis said he has been responding to Facebook pleas for help, rescuing families using his oversized truck, including one man who needed to save his rebel flag.

“I picked up one guy and his family, his wife – he just kept apologizing to me, because all he really had was his clothes, and he wanted to take his Confederate flag,” Lewis recalled. “He wanted to take that with him, and he just apologized and said, ‘Man, I’ll sit in the back of your truck, man. I don’t want to have my flag inside of your truck like this.’ I said, ‘Man, I’m not worried about that.’”

Maybe, it was his dead friends or some shit.

But more likely it was just his best flag and he didn't want to leave it behind / get water damaged.

intransigence when he's rescued????
He's the SUBJECT of the story being told.
Why's the story about the predicate- ... unless you want to confuse your readership.

Gawd, I hate those editors with their hand up... where they don't belong.
News confusion doesn't happen by accident.
Pay attention to your news outlet and their slant.

While his instagram has a lot of videos he was so busy rescuing people it's unlikely we'll ever see the white guys face. But I don't doubt it happened. Maybe the flag guy will come forward when this shit is over. And explain why he was so desperate to keep the flag. I'd like to hope it was a heirloom or whatever, something that meant something to him other than its meaning. But I have my doubts because I'm hopelessly cynical.

But I doubt he bothered to film the entire ordeal, including the aforementioned family. Just when it was safe he handed his phone to someone to take a video. (Other videos include him pulling a truck out of the water.) We're talking about a situation where he's driving, he's loading people up, and just going with it.

It's really his word, but there's no evidence that I see to disbelieve him whatsoever. He seemed honest and genuine in his commentary. Would be nice if the guy who had the flag came forward and explained why it was so important to him.

...the guy would've probably done so.

He was the bigger man. Accepted the apology for such a thing to be in his vehicle (and held in such high regard as to warrant an apology). He knew it meant something to the guy and didn't care. I truly believe he didn't give two shits about it. This is someone who spent an entire day rescuing people in heavily flooded waters.

I would've loved for the story to be "I told him to toss that flag" followed by "and he said 'OK, no problem," "and tossed it into the river." But alas that didn't happen. The MMA guy is the bigger man. It's the other guy's pitiful possession he chose to keep. No need making him be rid of it.

He took the time out of his life to save people from the hurricane and its effects. After all of the garbage that those bigots spewed forth in Charlottesville, and have been doing so for the longest time ( decades...centuries...you pick one ) here comes the exact kind of person that they want to eliminate from this country. What kind of an IQ does that get?

One guy, in the back of the truck, barely acknowledges him (while the rest wave and are thankful).

This is a great man with a good conscious.

The POS who couldn't even acknowledge that he helped them is a POS of garbage.

I am white. Comparing Lewis to this idiot lusting for his Confederate flag is sort of like comparing Obama to Trump.

All white people are not bad, of course. But the delusion of white supremacy and the master race is shown by Mr. Lewis and President Obama to be pig shit. Not to mention the whole army of citizens rescuing what people they can in Houston.
