Trump blames media for condemnation of comments on Virginia

PHOENIX (AP) — President Donald Trump is blaming the media for the widespread condemnation of his response to a Charlottesville, Virginia, protest organized by white supremacists that led to the killing of a counter-protester.

Trump opened his political rally in Phoenix with a call for unity, saying, “What happened in Charlottesville strikes at the core of America and tonight, this entire arena stands united in forceful condemnation of the thugs that perpetrated hatred and violence.”

But he quickly trained his ire on the media, shouting that he “openly called for healing unity and love” in the immediate aftermath of Charlottesville and claiming the media had misrepresented him. He read from his three responses to the violence — getting more animated with each one.

Democrats and fellow Republicans had denounced Trump for placing blame for the Charlottesville violence on “both sides.”

The media are unfairly putting him in a bad light by reporting his own actual words. So unfair! Sad...

4. Trump lied tonight about what was in his Saturday statement.

He purportedly read his remarks on that Saturday after Charlottesville, reading a sheet containing the prepared remarks from that day, but he left out the "on all sides...on ALL sides" unscripted comment he made. This was the comment everyone had objected to, and he in essence told everyone at that rally that he never said that.

In an attempt to discredit the media, Trump spent more than 20 minutes rereading parts of statements he made in the days following the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

“And they said, remember, they said, ‘well, he wasn’t specific enough. Why wasn’t he more specific?’ ” Trump said. “So in my second statement, I got really specific. And they said, ‘why didn’t he do it faster?’ ”

The President, as he read partial transcripts of his comments, did not repeat his most controversial remarks, in which he said there was “blame on many sides” for the violence that occurred.

“The words were perfect,” Trump told the adoring crowd.

He took his first statement on Charlottesville from his pocket and told his audience: “You know where my heart is. I’m really doing this to show you how damned dishonest these people are … I don’t want to bore you with this but it shows you how dishonest they are.”

Trump proceeded to read out the remarks to polite applause, although he failed to repeat the inflammatory words he had used when he blamed “both sides”.

More and more it's looking as though Trump thinks he's the reincarnation of Hitler. His actions, rhetoric, inane decisions, double entendres...Soon he'll start shaking and pounding his fists as he yells. Can shouts of Hail (in English) be far behind?

Maybe we should be thankful he didn't read up on Uncle Joe!

Is a military takeover a real possibility?

Trump, Calling Journalists ‘Sick People,’ Puts Media on Edge

President Trump’s angry condemnation of the news media during a campaign-style rally on Tuesday heightened the fear among journalists that verbal attacks on the profession could lead to physical attacks.

While criticizing media coverage has long been a surefire tactic to rile up crowds, the depth of the president’s most recent jabs took even seasoned journalists by surprise. He called journalists “sick people,” accused the news media of “trying to take away our history and our heritage” and questioned their patriotism.

“I really think they don’t like our country,” he said.

Throughout the presidential campaign, Mr. Trump would frequently turn the attention of rallygoers to the areas containing journalists, who would then be greeted with obscenities and taunts. Journalists are well-accustomed to being disliked at his rallies.

But Tuesday’s remarks struck a tone that alarmed journalists more than usual. Margaret Sullivan, a media columnist for The Washington Post, called it “the most sustained attack any president has ever made on the press.”

“To see this sort of attack coming yet again from the president is deeply disturbing,” said Courtney C. Radsch, the advocacy director for the Committee to Protect Journalists. “It creates an environment in which attacks on the press, both verbal and potentially physical, could become common.”

There has been little doubt that journalists have faced increasing harassment online, leading to widespread self-censorship, Dr. Radsch said. Journalists have been targets of “doxxing,” or publishing sensitive personal information like phone numbers and home addresses of the journalists and their families.

The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker has identified 15 physical attacks on journalists in 2017, the first year the site has documented.......................................
