North Korea fires missile from test site, U.S. officials confirm
Last Updated May 13, 2017 6:22 PM EDT
North Korea launched a missile from a test facility near the country's west coast early Sunday morning, U.S. officials tell CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.
The launch came just days after South Koreans went to the polls to elect a new president.
The South Korean military says the missile flew about 435 miles, or 700 kilometers, according to Reuters. The missile flew for 30 minutes before landing the Sea of Japan, Reuters said, citing a Japanese official.
U.S. officials said they were still assessing whether the launch was successful and trying to determine what kind of missile was tested. The last North Korean missile test on April 28 failed minutes after launch.

(9,808 posts)Also, the several thousand people who are deployed in South Korea and Japan. And the millions who live there.
No, I am not hawking, not at all. Lil Kim is having a tantrum because he's not the biggest asshole on the planet anymore. When the DPRK system goes unstable, it's likely to be really ugly, because it's not a binary system and we have no functioning State Department. It's not just the US-DPRK. It's the US, DPRK, China, Japan, South Korea, and Russia. Assume THADD works, and one of the 5 interceptors does its job. Those other four? They don't have a recall setting, they don't have a lot of maneuvering fuel, and they don't have a safe landing mode. So THADD 2-5 crash somewhere, likely Russia or China. Do you think either country is likely to be forgiving of collateral damage and civilian deaths after a violation of sovereignty and airspace? Or will they exploit it? It could easily be a Frank Ferdinand situation, but on meth and steroids.

(9,808 posts)If you're not already following Arms Control Wonk (http://www.armscontrolwonk.com), they cover a lot of DPRK wonkery. The thing with a test fire is the closer one fires to perpendicular to the surface of the earth, the greater the degree the range can be masked. It takes a lot more energy to fire up than out, because gravity is harsh that way.
But 435 miles is more than enough for the DPRK to hit Tokyo or Okinawa, and Seoul is extremely easy.

The theoretical range may be 4500 km on a more conventional trajectory.

(9,808 posts)Lots of Open Source Intel in play, but the general consensus is Lil Kim has a big boy rocket now. No more baby scuds.
Vladivostok was within easy range. So those Russian troops sitting about 20 miles off the PDRK's border and the Chinese ones sitting even closer on their side is... well. This could get complicated.

North Korea has carried out another ballistic missile test, days after a new president took office in the South. Japanese officials say the missile, which launched from north-western Kusong, reached an altitude of 2,000km.
(snip)
The nature of the launch is still being determined, but analysts have said the test could suggest a longer range than previously tested devices. The Japanese defence minister said it flew for about 30 minutes before falling in the Sea of Japan and could be a new type of missile. Tomomi Inada said it covered a distance of about 700km (435 miles), reaching an altitude of more than 2,000km (1,245 miles) - higher than that reached by an intermediate-range missile North Korea fired in February. Experts quoted by Reuters say the altitude meant the missile was launched at a high trajectory, limiting the lateral distance it travelled. They say if it had been fired at a standard trajectory, it would have had a range of at least 4,000km.

North Korea says missile test aimed at testing carrying large nuclear warhead: KCNA
North Korea said on Monday it had successfully conducted a mid-to-long range missile test on Sunday supervised by leader Kim Jong Un which was aimed at verifying the capability to carry a "large scale heavy nuclear warhead."
The missile was launched at the highest angle so as not to affect the security of neighboring countries and flew 787 kilometers reaching an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers, the North's official KCNA news agency reported.
