FBI obtained FISA warrant to monitor former Trump adviser Carter Page
Source: Washington Post
The FBI obtained a secret court order last summer to monitor the communications of an adviser to presidential candidate Donald Trump, part of an investigation into possible links between Russia and the campaign, law enforcement and other U.S. officials said.
The FBI and the Justice Department obtained the warrant targeting Carter Pages communications after convincing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court judge that there was probable cause to believe Page was acting as an agent of a foreign power, in this case Russia, according to the officials.
This is the clearest evidence so far that the FBI had reason to believe during the 2016 presidential campaign that a Trump campaign adviser was in touch with Russian agents. Such contacts are now at the center of an investigation into whether the campaign coordinated with the Russian government to swing the election in Trumps favor.
Page has not been accused of any crimes, and it is unclear whether the Justice Department might later seek charges against him or others in connection with Russias meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The counterintelligence investigation into Russian efforts to influence U.S. elections began in July, officials have said. Most such investigations dont result in criminal charges.

And we would comply because that would be the democratic thing to do, the just thing to do.

(50,255 posts)Of course it is the pro quo that is the interesting part, rumored to be the removal of sanctions in exchange for election rigging.
What we do know is that the Russian Ambassador to the US was at the RepubliCON CONvention to watch the plank on Ukraine be watered down. It was the only plank that the tRump Campaign wanted changed. The Ambassador was there also to talk with Jeff Sessions and a couple others, a fact that Sessions CONveniently 'forgot' to tell under oath when questioned by the Senate of the USA.

But I agree with you -- the key is bad PR, and if the Rosneft deal is linked to the admin, the resulting bad press will take them down.
Too bad the for-profit media aren't hammering the Mar-a-lago corruption or we might take him down without Rosneft.

We already have a stolen SCOTUS seat...if the FBI had come forward with their findings that may not have happened. I appreciate the need to be completely defensible with any accusations/conclusions, but terrible things could happen while the FBI is keeping all this secret.

Trump and Putin discuss coordinating on ISIS and Syria, Kremlin says
President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had their first official phone conversation Saturday, agreeing to partner in the fight against terrorism and the Arab-Israeli conflict and to forge stronger economic and political ties between their two countries, the Kremlin said.
At a moment of badly strained relations between the United States and Russia, Trump has hoped to cultivate a great relationship with Putin despite domestic pressures to maintain sanctions against Moscow.
Trumps call with Putin was one in a series of conversations he had Saturday with world leaders as he seeks to develop a personal rapport with the heads of such traditional U.S. allies as France, Germany and Japan.
His conversation with Putin comes during a period of tension for the two countries brought by Russias role in the Ukrainian crisis and the war in Syria, as well as the conclusion by U.S. intelligence agencies that Putin ordered systematic hacking of Democratic emails to tip the presidential election in Trumps favor have strained. The leaders agreed to have their staffs determine a possible time and place for their first meeting, the Kremlin said.

(79 posts)I thought maybe he might have had to at least try to throw the election or face exposing his role in and the depth of the Russian investigations, and possibly tipping off suspect FBI agents. Though I admit the double agent thing is pretty far fetched.

(9,131 posts)The WaPo article times the cointel investigation as starting in July '16. But if Page was already on their radar, for years, it seems possible that they really expanded their investigation of him in March, when dRumpfenfuhrer issued his very short list of 'foreign policy 'heavyweight' whizzes on the dRumpf team' & bragged about having him as a foreign policy advisor.
Completely legal and sensible to step up surveillance of Page then, before a FISA warrant was even applied for and granted. That ongoing surveillance could even be part of the evidence used in the FISA application.
