President Xi Jinping of China, Stung by Trump's Taiwan Call, Is Said to Shun Talks
Source: NYT
WASHINGTON When the White House announced this week that President Trump had sent President Xi Jinping of China a letter wishing him a happy Chinese New Year, it did not disclose a major reason for the friendly gesture: Mr. Xi has not gotten on the phone with Mr. Trump.
Stung by Mr. Trumps unorthodox telephone call with the president of Taiwan and his subsequent assertion that the United States might no longer abide by the One China policy, Mr. Xi has not spoken to Mr. Trump since Nov. 14, the week after he was elected. Administration officials say they believe he will only do so after Mr. Trump publicly commits to recognizing a single Chinese government in Beijing.
The letter, which the White House took the unusual step of releasing publicly on Wednesday, was an effort to keep the United States-China relationship from unraveling further, several officials said, especially as Mr. Trump is about to welcome Japans prime minister for an extravagant three-day visit that will include a weekend of golf in Florida.
Relations between Washington and Beijing have been frozen since December, when Mr. Trump took a congratulatory phone call from Taiwans president, Tsai Ing-wen. The United States has not had diplomatic relations with Taiwan since 1979, but Mr. Trump defended the call by saying he did not know why the United States should be bound by the One China policy.

(3,290 posts)at all his failed businesses and his lack of any intellectual curiosity I cannot help but think stupidity or at the least ignorance has always played a large role. Just his day to day behavior for someone in his powerful position in alienating so very many people does not speak well for his intelligence level.

(26,368 posts)No, I believe that its more likely that his wild mood swings and lack of control are a sign he has Alzheimers and he probably has had it for for a number of years and its been slowly getting worse and now its entering the middle and or late stages.

He doesn't understand the geopolitics and he is a danger because he can get us into a war due to his own ignorance.
However there is much to admire about Taiwan. One they are a democracy. Two they elected a women as president. Three they are one of the most LGBT friendly countries in Asia.

I just like to point out that if a Democratic President took this kind of action regarding China we would likely supporting them.

(1,652 posts)The threat of China invading Taiwan is too great. They do not see Taiwan as a separate country. And, we need China as an ally--I wouldn't want it as an enemy.
