Julian Assange could be evicted from the Ecuadorean embassy in London by the start of Spring if opposition candidate Guillermo Lasso comes out on top in next months Ecuadorean presidential election.
Assange has been housed at the embassy since June 2012. Ecuador granted the WikiLeaks founder asylum after Sweden sought his extradition to face questioning over an accusation of sexual assault. Assange claimed that he could face extradition to the United States and be prosecuted over the leaking of documents, videos and diplomatic cables obtained by Chelsea Manning. Those leaked materials would lead to the founding of WikiLeaks.
But Lasso, of the right-wing Creo-Suma Alliance, has argued that its time for Assanges stay to come to an end.
The Ecuadorian people have been paying a cost that we should not have to bear, he told The Guardian in an interview published Thursday. We will cordially ask Señor Assange to leave within 30 days of assuming a mandate.

(4,699 posts)While anything could happen Lenin Moreno is more likely to win. Moreno is of the same party as Correa, the current president and is probably more popular. I don't know if Moreno has stated a position on Assange or not though I do think the Ecuadorian people are becoming less enthusiastic about keeping him.

(81,608 posts)If I'd been running a news division, I would have sent a memo around to all writers, producers, and air-talent. Because as long as they all saw fit to make sure some mention of "emails" was almost literally surgically attached to EVERY mention of Hillary Clinton, then one other thing should be - no, WILL BE mandatory. EVERY mention of Julian Assange should include the sexual assault charges from which he's actively been hiding, to avoid having to face. I think EVERY time one includes a locator for him - in the Ecuadoran embassy - that it should clearly be explained as to why he's living there. He's NOT Ecuadoran himself, after all. He's in hiding, trying to avoid facing the music.

I'm sure he's just packing his things and cleaning up the place.
