Shah Rukh Khan detained at US airport, diplomat apologises
Source: New Indian Express
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was detained at a US airport following which a senior US diplomat of Indian origin apologised.
"I fully understand and respect security with the way the world is, but to be detained at US immigration every damn time really really sucks," Shah Rukh said in a tweet posted on Friday morning (IST).
Khan, 50, in another tweet said, "The brighter side is while waiting caught some really nice Pokemons."

In 2012, he was detained at a New York airport for two hours when he had arrived to visit Yale University, where he was honoured as a Chubb Fellow.

We really need to fix this. He's arguably the most famous living person, and he goes to the US a lot...

(7,638 posts)I am not surprised. Before I got my US citizenship, I used to be constantly bothered at the border. Mind you, I am a white male, was born in France. However, due to my work I would get all sorts of crazy comments from the immigration officers, sometimes made to wait in a room for them to check out my status. I am a nuclear physicist. Once, an agent told me we do not like people like you coming here. Wtf ? I was at that time, working for the french CNRS (the equivalent of our DOE) and collaborating on projects with american colleagues from the DOE. I had an invitation letter from a US department of energy lab. They somehow found it suspicious. I wasted 2 hours in a room when they checked it out and made phone calls. A DOE employee had to phone them..
To be honest, this improved drastically when President Obama got elected. I no longer hear stories of colleagues being treated rudely at the border as it used to be routine.

(45,628 posts)It's something i just have gotten used to. I always allocate way more time for security checks when traveling. This is a regular occurrence for brown males. The worst part, is that my family is Christian and have biblical names. Many TSA agents just cannot seem to handle seeing someone with an "American name and accent" who doesn't "look American". It's too suspicious.
At least a famous international actor gets treated the same way as a regular joe. While racial profiling is shameful and bad, many Indian-Americans are glad that a celebrity has made it newsworthy. There are some disgusting stories out there of innocent people missing flights or detained for longer time periods or even being roughed up by the police too.
Flying while brown is much like driving while black.
Life will be simpler once Trump's storm troopers implement their solution to make America great again.

(65,528 posts)accept the silly claim that he is "the most famous living person."
Of course, I also agree that he should not have been detained and hassled.

(56,582 posts)In the Middle East and Asia his recognition numbers are something like 99%.

(65,528 posts)Probably he would not have difficulty being recognized by immigration agents in Asia or the Middle East.
OTOH, no traveler, famous or not, should be harassed simply because he or she is not lily white, and that does seem to happen an awful lot.

(135,425 posts)I have a name that is similar (off by one letter) to someone well-known who was in the public eye; I've no idea if that was the problem or something else. This guy may have the sorry misfortune of having a name that is a remote sound-alike for a minor terra-playa factotum.
All I know is that within a month of inauguration day, I was off that list and I have not been bothered for the entire duration of the Obama administration.
I used to show them my military ID card when they'd start fucking with me; at least they had the sense of shame to be embarassed, most times--but every now and again I got a sanctimonious asshole. It got to the point where I'd mail my clothes ahead if I were staying for awhile. I got tired of having my shit "tossed" and then being left to repack in a hurry, or be given those "OK, now we've fucked w/you, move along" looks.
I think, if they fuck with you 3x or more, they should give you some sort of "trusted traveler" designation and at least give you the "expedite/kid gloves" treatment if your name pops up.
What's stupid is that he had already LANDED. If he was gonna pull some shit, he would have done it on the front end!

(56,582 posts)It was from a survey where they showed people from all over the world photos and asked if they could name who it was. Obama, Elizabeth II, and SRK were all up there, but SRK "won".

(4,490 posts)Anyone with half a brain and access to google can confirm his worldwide fame. Saying he's a "nobody" is just exceptionally stupid. Very Trump like in its denial of easily confirmed reality and ignorance of the world.
