Why She Screamed: Meryl Streep’s Complex Bond With Hillary Clinton

PHILADELPHIA Meryl Streep, the most accomplished, awarded and chameleonic actress of her generation, once confessed something approaching envy for Hillary Clinton: For women of her age, Ms. Streep said, Mrs. Clinton was the yardstick by which they inevitably measured their lives sometimes flatteringly, sometimes not.
On Tuesday night, Ms. Streep took to the floor of the Democratic National Convention here to make the case that Mrs. Clinton, the object of that admiration, worry and judgment, was the right choice for the presidency.
What does it take to be the first female anything? Ms. Streep asked. It takes grit and it takes grace.
Ms. Streep appeared on stage shortly before 11 p.m. with raised fists and a loud, primal and triumphant scream seemingly delivered on behalf of women everywhere.
Throughout her speech, the 67-year-old Ms. Streep sought to place Mrs. Clinton, who is 68, in the pantheon of pioneering American women, from Amelia Earhart and Harriet Tubman to Sandra Day OConnor and Geraldine Ferraro. She dwelled the longest on Deborah Sampson, a woman who disguised herself as a man to serve in the Continental Army. Ms. Sampson was shot while serving and removed the musket ball herself to avoid revealing her gender.

(87,090 posts)I saw something less than a scream and I object to all women who raise their voices to express relief or exasperation described as screaming and other demeaning terms for not acting in a manner of "knowing her place" as a subservient class of human.
Fuck those who use those terms.

(22,684 posts)The person most of us have known all along. The good person who serves and fights for those who support her, all of us.
The RW can smear democrats by repeating negative words all they want, but it CAN'T change facts. We love Hillary. We love Bill. We love Nancy. We love Harry. They're all great public servants that we admire.
HRC is just that much stronger and better. She's breaking the glass ceiling. AND rightfully so. She's a wonderful person and will make a great first female POTUS.
We just have to make it happen.

(5,902 posts)Why does an elitist, school milk-snatching war criminal pedophile like Thatcher get Meryl Streep to portray her, and a brave and decent person like Hillary can't?

That was a cool learning moment.

(813 posts)that is was more of a "squee" than "scream". Pure excitement.
(On another front, if you haven't, go watch the 538 short documentary on the "Dean Scream" to hear it in context. I remember even when it happened going "Hasn't any one of the folks covering the campaign gone to a church with an impassioned preacher?"
