Law enforcement: 2 dead, as many as 17 shot at Fort Myers nightclub

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two people are dead, according to the Fort Myers Police Department, and as many as 17 people were shot, according to Lt. Jim Mulligan of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, at a local nightclub, Club Blu located at 3580 Evans Avenue, early Monday morning.

There are two active scenes — one located on Ortiz Avenue between Luckett and Ballard roads — as authorities search for suspects and persons of interest.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. One attendee said the gunshots rang out outside, as she hid under a table inside the nightclub, which was hosting a teen party.

“Everyone tried to run and duck for cover. I’m sorry I’m so shaken up,” she wrote via Facebook.

Two people have been murdered and 17 have been wounded in a mass shooting at a Florida night club.

The gunman entered the club and opened fire hitting people as young as 13 in Club Blu, in Fort Myers in Florida.

The incident happened shortly after 1am. Lieutenant Jim Mulligan of Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed as many as 17 people had been wounded.

Syreeta Gary's daughter survived the attack. Speaking on a Twitter video, she said: 'Well, I just thank God that my daughter is okay. She could have been shot. She was dodging bullets and dropping between cars.

'It is ridiculous that kids have to go through this and they cannot enjoy themselves because you have people with criminalistic minds who want to terrorize people.

'I'm just glad that she's okay.

'She was running away from bullets so she wouldn't get shot. Her friend got shot in the leg.

'They were running for safety

ABC Pittsburgh affiliate. About every five minutes they're going to the shooting story. There's a second "active site," whatever that means.

coverage of these mass shootings self-peroetuates them via copycat acts, and is a HUGE reason were seeing record numbers of such events.

What local law enforcement would rather have people drop are tips to help find those responsible for killing teenagers Sean Archilles, 14, and Stef'An Strawder, 18, and injuring at least 17 others in the club's parking lot at 3580 Evans Ave. in Fort Myers early Monday morning. Three shooting victims remain hospitalized. Two are in critical condition, and one is in fair condition.

Trish Routte, coordinator for Crime Stoppers, said the group has not received one tip in the Club Blu shooting but held out hope that some may still come forward.

“What happened yesterday morning at Club Blu completely rocked our community," Routte said in a statement. "Young lives, that held so much promise for the future, were senselessly taken. Many others were randomly shot, leaving both physical and mental wounds. We are confident that there are people who have information on the shooters involved, and the individuals who had clear intentions to incite murder and mayhem that morning. They just, for whatever reason, haven’t come forward yet."

The Fort Myers Police Department reported at least eight complaints withdrawn from potential witnesses. Law enforcement agencies investigating a crime like the Club Blu case spend the time, effort and resources which can end up being for nothing if a victim or a witness decides to drop the complaint. Only the person who filed the complaint can withdraw it.

Club Blu: Stef'An Strawder's family to file wrongful death suits

On Tuesday, Joseph R. North of Fort Myers-based North Law Firm sent letters to Club Blu and Carrell Corners West, the property lot owned by IMC Equity Group where the restaurant sits, notifying them of the family's intention to file wrongful death and negligence of security suits on behalf of White and Sylvester Strawder, Stef'An's father.

North's impending lawsuit will claim the restaurant and property did not provide legal safeguards during the teen event, promoted as a "Swimsuit Glow Party," which took place on Sunday night and required no identification. At least 16 individuals were injured following the shooting, ranging from ages 12 to 27.

"The security there did not work," North said. "But also, we do not understand why they put on a party where it was promoted no one needed an ID. They almost encouraged grown people to mingle with children, which was not a good mix.

"This case, like a lot of cases I have against property owners, is with the goal of making our community safer overall," North added. "There is a lot that property owners can do to prevent these tragedies from happening."

Yes, of course, this is a problem of ID, and adults and children mingling, not of a gun culture. Guns can't fail culture - culture can only fail guns.
