Sheridan parade driver defends 'Lying African' Obama golf cart
Source: indystar.com
An entry in Sheridan's (Indiana) Independence Day Parade included what many are calling a racist depiction of President Obama in a toilet and the words "Lying African."
"The parade, it's for kids. This is Independence Day," said Darryl Brownie, 31. "It was just wrong."
Brownie was at the parade with his wife and four children, ages 2 through 9, when he saw the golf cart and started taking photos. He posted the pictures on Facebook because he wanted to let the public know "how disrespectful it was."
The golf cart displayed signs for presidential candidate Donald Trump on the roof. The driver wore an orange prison suit and a blond wig.
Don Christy, 73, Sheridan, told IndyStar that he drove the golf cart in the parade. He said he didn't fill out an entry form. He said he lined up with other floats at the high school parking lot and was waved along when the parade started.
"I'm not a Democrat. I'm not a Republican," Christy said. "I'm a patriot."
Christy said he is tired of political correctness and was just trying to be funny. The display was not intended to be racist, he said. Christy agreed that others have a right to be offended, just as he has the right to express his views.
"I apologize to anyone I offended, which would be a total liberal. I have my right to say things," Christy said. "Isn't that what the Fourth of July's about? Freedom."
Sheridan Police Chief Robert Shock said Tuesday morning that he had not yet heard any complaints about the golf cart.

I have cousins in Indiana. They keep trying to 'friend' me on Facebook, but I decline.

Just pure racism on public display.
And they have a hissey fit if LGBT have a parade.

My sister lives in SE IN. It is pure Trump country - many people live there without ever seeing anyone but other conservative white people. They literally know not what they do.

(10,810 posts)... exactly what the term "bigot" means, but to them, white conservative bigots are just "Patriots." (I came from a very racist and bigoted part of the country and still have relatives there, myself.)

(33,620 posts)I'm just saying that, in a lot of ways, they're naïve. They're more convinced that librul city slickers are bigoted against their "real" American values.
Last time I was there (May) their main value seems to be mowing acres and acres of grass. That's all I saw anyone doing.

(5,732 posts)does it mean a person supports the illegal invasion of the middle east by the Bush crime family, does it mean that as a nation, we are so ignorant that we will believe and support anything that we see on Faux news and donate billions to elect wealthy crooks to lie to us and rule our lives while they steal our money and make more and more of the world uninhabitable? All the while pretending we are free and the good guys in the world.

Sunset counties are the donut. If you're black, be gone by sunset. And the farther you get on the donut the whiter it gets.
Sheridan isn't the exception. It's the rule.
Obama carried Indiana in 2008 on the strength of the minorities in the urban areas coupled with the collegiate educational areas and the white working class who were hurt by the outsourcing and loss of industry.
He lost Indiana in 2012 because the latter two groups felt abandoned.
There's a lesson here. If the democrats want to regain Indiana, read 2008. If they want to keep it, read 2012.

The man behind a Fourth of July parade entry that depicted President Obama as a "Lying African" in one of the last major parades during his presidency has defended the controversial float, saying it was meant to be taken in jest.
Seventy-three-year-old Don Christy wore an orange prison jumpsuit and a shaggy blond wig as he drove a golf cart displaying a campaign poster for presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump on Monday in the Independence Day parade in Sheridan, near Indianapolis.
The parade entry seemed to show an Obama effigy sitting on a toilet that read "Royal Flush."
"I apologize to anyone I offended, which would be a total liberal," Christy told the Indianapolis Star amid community outcry. "I have my right to say things. Isn't that what the Fourth of July's about? Freedom."
