WILMINGTON, Del. White House hopeful Bernie Sanders said Saturday that many of his losses to Hillary Clinton in Democratic primaries were because poor people dont vote.
The senator from Vermont,.....................was asked during a taping of NBCs Meet the Press why Clinton had prevailed in 16 of 17 states so far with the highest levels of income inequalilty.
Well, because poor people don't vote, Sanders told host Chuck Todd...............
.......
..............It's not clear that larger turnout among poor voters would have actually helped Sanders against Clinton, however.
Sanders has lost Democratic voters with household incomes below $50,000 by 55 percent to 44 percent to Clinton across primaries where network exit polls have been conducted. (He has lost by a wider 21 percentage-point margin among voters with incomes above $100,000, and by 9 points among middle income voters.).........................

(5,044 posts)If he's saying that poor people don't vote, is he in turn saying that the people who've voted for him are not poor? Here's the truth that he and his surrogates can't seem to get over, what he's selling, people are not buying. Hopefully he's beginning to understand The democratic party, by 2.7 million votes does not want him to be the party nominee. Period. End of story.

(30,254 posts)Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said that many of his state primary losses were because "poor people don't vote," according to a transcript of his interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press" with Chuck Todd.
In the segment, set to air on Sunday, Todd asked Sanders why nearly all of the primaries in states with the highest levels of income inequality have been won by his rival, Hilary Clinton.
"Well, because poor people don't vote. I mean, that's just a fact," Sanders said. "That's a sad reality of American society. And that's what we have to transform."

Just as bad as dismissing Southern states. BTW, Senator, more lower income people have voted for your opponent.

(6,953 posts)Poor people have a much harder time voting because of longer working hours and domestic demands. But there is also a significant number of rich people don't vote either for whatever reason.
I think the statistics on voting participation by income group would give the exact numbers.
Edit: Here they are. 80% of those making $150,000 vote, 47% of people making $10,000/yr. vote.

(11,377 posts)Poor people move more often, making it difficult to maintain their voter registration, and they are far more likely to lack IDs which are now required in many states. Transportation to polling places is also an issue.
The issue is not apathy, it's disenfranchisement.

Why Bernie is losing is because millions of Americans don't think his opponent will be influenced by the tens of millions she has milked out of Wall Street scum bags.
They can believe what they want.
I choose to live in the real world, and listen to what people say, and watch what they do.
And of course I watch how they change positions with the political wind......
To some all that evidence doesn't matter.
To me it is all there is.
Helping Bush sell his war and calling one's self a Progressive makes me want to hurl.

(1,214 posts)Well, because poor people don't vote, Sanders told host Chuck Todd. I mean, that's just a fact. That's a sad reality of American society.
Sanders said that while his campaign has done a good job of attracting young voters, hes had less success driving up turnout of lower-income people. In the 2014 election, he said, 80 percent of poor people did not vote.
If we can significantly increase voter turnout so that low-income people and working people and young people participated in the political process, if we got a voter turnout of 75 percent, this country would be radically transformed, Sanders said during the taping of the segment, which is scheduled to air Sunday morning.
Good thing that it's only republicans purging our roles right before an election. It's great to know that our party leaders are making sure that every Democratic voter that wants to vote can.
It would be great if Clinton fans actually wanted those voters participating in the general election rather than trying to score cheap points. It would also be great if our party leadership could be bothered to protect our voting rights. Just how many times do we need to see election fraud like the voter role purge in Florida. If I remember correctly despite being begged by 23 Congressional Representatives, our Democratic Senators refused to hear the evidence.

(1,968 posts)He could have perhaps framed the statement more diplomatically, but there there are out there who won't vote, don't vote, and can't vote.
There's way to much disenfranchisement and barriers imposed, and there are also too many lazy people out there.
There's lack of access in some places and ignorance in others.
These states who don't let felons who've served their debt to society vote ought to be ashamed of themselves... They aren't, but they should be.

(44 posts)I work as a precinct chair in a poor rural county. The poor here don't vote because they don't believe that voting can actually change their lives. "You can't fight city hall" is the mentality, plus, in my state, voting restrictions have scared them away from the polls. We need more activists, better ongoing voter education to turn things around.

(44 posts)Bernie's message of a fair shake for all Americans, particularly working families who have seen stagnant wages for 30 years, destroying the American dream, should resonate with 99% of us. But the reality is that when you work at the grass roots level, as I do, you see extreme apathy among the poor, those who should be first in line at the polls. That's a fact, and you have only to get involved in voter education and registration to witness it, over and over.

(50,359 posts)They've been screwed over by this country for so long, they don't feel a part of it. Many are constantly on the move and don't establish residency in order to vote if they wanted to. Bernie is definitely speaking to them, but if people don't or can't vote, this is what happens. It was just like Ferguson, MO. 90% of the city was AA, but almost all local government - including cops - was white. I think that has improved some since there was an effort made to get people to vote. In any case, I don't know why Hillary people find this particular problem amusing.
