Donald Trump Thinks North Carolina Got It Wrong On Anti-LGBT Bathroom Bill
Source: Huffington Post
During a town hall on NBC, Trump said North Carolinas anti-LGBT bathroom measure, which has hurt the state economically, wasnt necessary and sought to address a problem that wasnt really a big issue. The bill also prohibits local municipalities from passing additional measures to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination.
North Carolina did something that was very strong and theyre paying a big price. Theres a lot of problems, Trump said. You leave it the way it is. There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble, and the problem with what happened in North Carolina is the strife, and the economic punishment that theyre taking.
Advocates of the North Carolina law, which only allows people to use the restroom that corresponds with the gender on their birth certificate, say it is necessary to protect the privacy of children. As Trump pointed out, the suggestion that allowing transgender people to use the bathroom they want will jeopardize the safety of other people is a myth.
Trumps position is a clear break from his rival for the Republican nomination, Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), who has called the North Carolina bill a perfectly reasonable determination for the people to make.

Honestly I get the whole broken clock theory but I never expected this.

(1,178 posts)He's not a real anything, other than being a great self promoter and supreme narcissist. The man can and will pivot on a dime if he feels it serves his needs. This is one of the reasons the Republican establishment is having conniptions. They don't care whether their candidate is competent because they will install operatives to actually do the work (Bush, meet Cheney). They DO very much care whether they can control their candidate, and Trump has too big an ego to let anyone control him fully.

(6,113 posts)Trump goes off in various directions, even reversing his own positions. While this issue might have little impact in the GE, he takes a lot of positions that can outflank Clinton in particular. Suddenly he quits being quite so scary to many voters. And he is unpredictable. Not good. We should not become too complacent. Remember Reagan and W.

Candidates who will lie about anything to get elected are very difficult in a democracy.

Imagine how easy it would be to manipulate this goofball if he got into the White House. Hold a gun to his wallet and he'd give you his baby.

(24,692 posts)The problem is "the strife" and "the economic punishment" - not the morality or ethics of the law. If it were not for the 'strife' and the 'economic punishment' - if people just accepted this and left North Carolina alone - what would Trump do?

(31,386 posts)There are a lot of right wing fundie evangelicals--the source of HB 2--in NC, but there are still a lot of moderate
Republican types, too.
The best thing I can say about HB 2 is that it's going to cause McCrory to become a one term governor
when he loses to Cooper in November. The base that McCrory had-- in Charlotte where he was mayor--
is not going to back him come November.

(1,089 posts)He's going to veer left on a lot of things, basically because he can. His current supporters are hate-filled ignoramuses who would follow him into a burning fire pit. They won't like this, but at that point their hatred will be focused on HRC like millions of laser beams in their intensity. These bigots are NOT going to suddenly vote for HRC, as they would not do so even if they were to be given a million dollars for voting for her - they still wouldn't do it. So they're still going to vote for Trump even if he suddenly adopts Bernie's entire platform.
Stuff like this is going to resonate with the soft middle that will be paying attention to the race for the first time. They're going to say, "Hmm, that seems reasonable... perhaps he's not so bad." If he gets enough of them to say that it could lead to trouble for HRC.
Drumpf is a lot of negative things, but anyone with a brain has to admit that he's a world-class, perhaps all-time bullshitter. He's going to take low-info folks for a ride and that scares the hell out of me.
