Student group calls University of New Mexico seal offensive
Updated 3:59 pm, Sunday, April 17, 2016
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The University of New Mexico's official seal depicting a Spanish conquistador and a frontiersman is drawing accusations of racism from Native American students.
Native American students in the Kiva Club as well as members of advocacy group The Red Nation call the seal offensive, the Albuquerque Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1NgVOYk).
The seal is stamped on all diplomas and is present at most school events.
Oceti Sakowin tribe member and UNM doctoral student Nick Estes designed his own version of the seal in protest, with the conquistador and frontiersman standing atop a pile of bones. He spoke at an organizing meeting for students against the current seal, saying it represents racism at the school.

And yeah, those Conquistadors leave out a hell of a lot of people who were already here and quite civilized.

(45,984 posts)It would just be a simple re-design. No one is suggesting that the UNM replace all of the diplomas awarded in the last century or more, just that it use a more inclusive seal going forward.
I can get behind that. Can't you?

(9,090 posts)unm has no excuse for broadcasting sports on, and supporting with that station.
i once heard limbaugh say from kkob, after elizabeth warren said at the dem convention that corporations are not people "what are they then, indians?"
voter suppression, racism, conservation issues, global warming, energy issues, education funding , student debt, that station, while riding the unm lobo, is ALWAYS on the wrong side.
unm is one of 90 major unis supporting 270 limbaugh stations - it's absurd
kkob is the major voice of everything republican in the state. almost any major issue vs republicans can be protested at UNM. it's free for them, paid for by advertisers. get them to even discuss whether to stop broadcasting on kkob and their advertisers will flee, and the republican NM political machine will fall apart.

I can't stand waiting until his karma finally springs its big surprise on him. It should be amazing, one of a kind! Spectacular.
Your comments on right-wing radio are well constructed. How such a fiendish thing happened throughout the country is a filthy crime.
