Oregon standoff: 4 holdouts all in FBI custody as occupation ends (live updates)
Source: OregonLive
The four remaining occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge surrendered Thursday morning, bringing an end to the standoff on its 41st day.
Jeff Banta, Sean Anderson, Sandy Anderson and David Fry were taken into FBI custody. Fry was the last to surrender, finally emerging after an extended phone dialogue with supporters who tried for over an hour after the others left to get him to walk out.
FBI agents in armored vehicles had moved in Wednesday night on the four still at the refuge, hemming them into their camp and insisting they put down their guns and surrender.
Also Wednesday night, the FBI arrested Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy at Portland International Airport. He faces federal charges related to the 2014 standoff at his ranch. Bundy, 74, was booked into the downtown Multnomah County jail at 10:54 p.m. His booking mug shot was released Thursday morning by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office

(111,254 posts)A week later, we'd know if they were legitimately insane or just garden variety rebels looking for a cause. I'm betting on the former for Fry. The latter is probably true for the Bundy boys because crime was paying so well.
I'm delighted that old bastard Cliven is now facing prison. It's about bloody time.

This woman talking to him is feeding him total BS. Most people simply will not care for Fry because he is coming across as a total lunatic. To be heard you must first be rational.

But by not ending the standoff sooner, it makes him look timid and afraid of white people instead -- and it opens the door for others to follow in Fry's footsteps. Indeed, if he'd come down on Bundy in Nevada, I doubt this would have happened.
I fully realize that it was a decision between bad and worse. But you should always choose bad, because choosing worse makes you LOOK worse.

(5,306 posts)Law enforcement investigators will be going in and documenting all the crimes that were committed and the damage that was done inside the refuge and the buildings. I'm sure enough additional charges will be added up to ensure these will be serving lengthy prison terms.

(194 posts)by the extraordinary patience and restraint the FBI has shown these law breaking armed adult criminals. Almost any other ethnicity or religious group of 4 armed people would never have been allowed this much leeway to so brazenly challenge law enforcement. I think it sends a terrible message about the unequal treatment of law enforcement in this country, just from a different perspective. And I don't think its something that happens in a vacuum without consequences, because it plays into the hands of those who preach we have a two tier justice system. And it feeds into a pessimistic view of law enforcement from those communities including myself, that the use of deadly force for people of color is significantly higher, but the ability to get justice for unjustified killings in those same communities is greatly diminished. And if your an American who cares about the rule of law, I don't care what color you are, this should be deeply troubling to you. Because in the future, one day, you or your children may find yourselves in the minority, with the value of your lives diminished in the eyes of the American judicial system.

(34,845 posts)But I feel compelled to point out that the FBI may not be a fair comparison to local police officers since they're a national law enforcement organization. Unless they, too, have shown trigger-happy tendencies toward non-white ethnicities in the past.

(160,526 posts)claims the FBI people were "going to ####ing hell", were "####ing idiots", etc., etc., etc., to the point you could imagine someone was shoving spikes under their spokesman's fingernails.
All the time, they were maintaining it was the officials who were not Christians, like them, were evil, etc., etc., etc. Astonishing lack of any form of self-control altogether. Completely odd, considering they were the ones who got themselves into this position.
It IS sad that these ugly people were given so much leeway, considering the treatment given all other groups of US American citizens.
Had any cultural, ethnic, or religious group attempted something like this it would have been vaporized on the spot, I have no doubt.

I want to know how much in costs WE the people of this country had to pay and will have to pay to the state and the federal level which were incurred on this terrorist action, including all of the future court costs--------------------there isn't enough cattle on the fathers ranch to cover these costs
And if the tin foil hat "dude" is afraid that he's going to get raped in prison, well guess what SPARKY---------------you and your play mates should have thought about that before you decided to do your terrorist act -----------------because that what it is terrorism

I'm very glad you made that distinction: if anyone dies (including by suicide) in the course of your committing a felony, you can also be charged with third degree or felony murder. But Cliven's charges were all related to the Nevada standoff -- he hadn't occurred any "legal jeopardy" of his own before going to Oregon?

(51,129 posts)as is every other member of their radical group. Ammon's lawyer picks up Fiore at the airport and transports her, so all the while she is on the phone while driving in Oregon she is with Ammon's attorney! Fry and company are the greatest risk to Ammon and Ryan once they are jailed because the charges would fall to them, and that would likely mean never getting out of jail if someone had died. So what we had was Ammon's attorney and friends working to deter further charges by getting the final four out of there. Ironically, in the end the one who wanted this to end the most was Ammon Bundy.
Fiore and Cliven are good buddies. Fiore was involved before this, before burns too, she was at the Ranch with Cliven celebrating his victory over the feds. She is trying to spin this into her own glory and a seat in Congress. She needs to have Cliven and Ammon hung around her neck all race long.
