After Hillary Clinton champions lead issue, Flint mayor endorses her
Source: Washington Post
IOWA CITY, Iowa In the last week, Hillary Clinton has seized on the issue of lead poisoning in the water supply of a small, poor, and predominantly African American town in Flint, Mich. and effectively injected the issue into the 2016 presidential contest.
The effort culminated on the Democratic debate stage on Sunday night, when Clinton used her closing statement to decry the "outrageous" situation in which children were bathing in and drinking poisoned water.
On Tuesday, the city's mayor Karen Weaver made it clear that after Clinton's efforts on behalf of her city, she would return the favor.
"I want Hillary," Weaver said on a conference call with reporters.
"We want a friend like Hillary in the White House," she added. "We need a fighter we need someone there fighting for the city of Flint."

(5,927 posts)The mayor probably hadn't read what Bernie had said days before the debate.

(3,964 posts)We do want some accountability, she said, But as far as what Hillary Clinton has done, she has actually been the only candidate, whether were talking about Democratic or Republican, to reach out and talk with us ... We want a friend like Hillary in the White House.
Weaver said she had spoken directly to the former first lady about her citys water crisis. The mayor said she relayed to Clinton how grateful the residents of Flint were that she spotlighted the issue during the Democratic debate on Sunday night.

(5,927 posts)Smart political move, and the right thing to do. I'd rather entrust the welfare of Flint to Bernie, but I think any of the Dem candidates would be better than Snyder. Don't get me started on that guy.

(9,214 posts)And Hillary got what she wanted from the mayor.
Hillary may play the card a few more times if it's still worth anything but then it's off to the discard pile for Flint.

(5,927 posts)we can also wonder what Hillary's lip service will change, if we want to ask those kind of questions. IMO both get credit for caring about the problem. She mentioned it at the debate; she deserves credit for that.
